Just saw this on a Toyota Stock market info about the Prius. Quite an increase in one Month

Sales of Toyota's Prius model gas-electric hybrid were up 49.2% to 3,778 units sold in March

Well mine was not one of these.......

Wonder if those are world-wide numbers. Elsewhere on the board, they've mentioned that the '04 Prius didn't go on sale in Europe until Feb. of this year. (At least in the Netherlands.)

Sales are up only on the Prius and the SUVs. This is starting to appeal to my competitive nature.

Oh, it's a 49.2% increase from March 2003. Initially, I thought the increase was compared to February 2004. (Yeah, I know -- I should have thought it through. Where would all those extra Prii come from? :? )

That doesn't surprise me a lot, really, between the (to my mind) vast improvements in the 2004 Prius from the 2003, the value for money of the '04, and the 1st year demand for a "hot new model". Still, very pleasing to see.

Now that opens up a can of speculation. Is it that Americans are buying far more trucks & SUVs than cars this year, for every automobile manufacturer? Or, with the exception of the Prius, is the Toyota 2004 car lineup considered substandard to the competition? (Guess you'd have to look at Honda, Ford and GM sales.)

It would also be interesting to see the effect of the price of gas going sharply up -- and staying up -- on the sales figures a year from now.

Well, the Prius is up 60% Year To Date over '03

However, the LS 430 is up 72% and the new Sienna is up 132%

The real question is, are there enough digits in their spreadsheet column to show the increase the Prius would have had if it had been available to buy :)

Heard my first radio commercial for the Lexus Hybrid on PBS of all places. I knew it was coming. Maybe the commercials mean it is here. Whatshisname

Ordered a RX400H the first week in January. Was advised then that it would be available Aug/Sept.

Since people were asking for month-over-month sales figures since the beginning of the '04 model:

    Code:

    Oct 03      4085

    Nov 03      5584

    Dec 03      4025

    Jan 04      2925

    Feb 04      3215

    Mar 04      3778

    ---------------------

    Total      23612

If the 47,000 refers to 2004 model run, then there would be 3898 cars left per month...

(FYI, Sep 03 was 112 cars).

Some of those Oct and later sales are certainly remaindered '03s. No telling how many though.

I'm sure Toyota loaded the pipeline with pre-production as is normally done with new models so there would be more available first month or two, but there were also old models sitting on the lots, and they would be in those numbers.

Found an update on European Prius sales.

    Key points:
    • Toyota 1st Quarter 2004 sales up 23% in Europe
    • Prius sales up from 1st quarter 2003 by 668% (not a typo) -- 2,088 units total for first quarter (if I read it right.)

I considered that possibility. That's why I mentioned that the September '03 numbers were 112. So, I wouldn't expect more than 100 or so classics in October & following months...not a large error.

That's possible, but I'm not so sure about it being down in the low hundereds nationwide.

Around here, people were holding off waiting for the '04s so '03s were stacking up on the lots. There were a number around.

After the '04s proved impossible to get they were able to sell the '03s quite handily.

I have no idea how many that actually was, but it was at least observable at multiple dealers locally.

Also, in reading all the groups in that time-frame, I anecdotally noticed a lot of folks who were settling for '03s.
