I live in Greater Boston. My insurance company has sharply increased the Collision premium on my 2017 Prius Prime. For those who have owned a Prime for more than a year, have you experienced anything similar?

    Who’s your insurance company?
Have you had any claims against your collision coverage?
I’ve only had my prime a short time.

I have never had insurance rate goes up on the same car WITHOUT at fault claim or moving violation. Something must have changed on you profile for them to increase premium. Easiest thing is to just call up your insurance company and ask the reason for hike.

Mine went up about $38/half year. Don't know why. My wife's Lexus 200h went up too about the same. I think the reason is the general creep until we reshop.

Insurance company is Commerce Insurance aka MAPFRE. I have made no claims.

The rates seem to have gone up slightly across the board for the Prius Prime (Premium), as well as the other family car which is newer. However, they have gone up sharply for Prius Prime's collision option.

I do plan to call the insurance company.

Curious if this is a MA phenomenon, or limited to this insurance company.

I'll keep an eye on it. Our collision through USAA (with $500 deductible) is $93 per six months for my 2018 Prime Advanced, and $73 for my wife's 2016 Honda HR-V.

Maybe Apples to Oranges comparison but my Prime is $100 more per 6 months than my second car which is a 2013 Toyota Venza.
The majority difference is Collision ($100 deductible) which is 100% more.
Bodily Injury & Property Damage +20%
    Medical Payments +0%
    Comprehensive Coverage ($0 deductible) +47%
The rest are virtually identical between vehicles.

As @Salamander_King kindly suggests, it’s best to ask the insurance company or agent to explain how the premium was calculated and what information was used.
Not necessarily. It is possible to have a substantial change in premium, even with no changes in risk or coverage, if there is a change in rating methodology or data source. Here in California, for example, my premium (for a fourth-generation Prius, not a Prius Prime) recently increased by nearly 30%, due entirely to such a change. The California Department of Insurance approved the new classification plan because the overall effect on the company’s policyholders was much smaller, but a few of us had more extreme increases or decreases.

One factor that may be at work here: when a new model is introduced, there is no loss experience, so policies are rated based on average losses for vehicles with similar characteristics. Over time, as claims are made, it becomes possible to estimate the frequency and severity of losses, relative to other vehicles, after which premiums are adjusted to more closely reflect the risk.

Walking the dog last night I noticed a Volvo of a certain age, looked pretty much like this:

    (similar stock photo)

I'd wager those black rubber bumpers are hydraulically mounted too.

    But now we progress

I've been with California AAA Auto Club for over 30 years. No claims ever filed; excellent driving record. It shocked me when I saw the full-coverage quote for my 2016 (non-Prime) Prius. Nearly double the cost to insure a Prius, compared to my cars in the past. But of course the Prius is much newer.

If my Prius was ever involved in a serious wreck, I don't think I would want to keep it. Even after whatever repairs are attempted... or done. (They can't even get an oil change right! :ROFLMAO:)

I think Electro and Mendel nailed it. Brand new design. No one knows what repair costs will be until they start seeing some bills.

It is always a good idea to shop around for insurance. Every two or three years I take the bundle of homeowner's, umbrella, earthquake, rent house, & car policies to a new company and ask what their cost will be. I keep them bundled for my convenience, and splitting them might save a few bucks. The last time I checked Amica was a few dollars lower for some, a bit higher for others, close enough to what I'm paying Safeco now that it wasn't worth changing. A few years ago my Safeco agent did move me to a lower priced part of Safeco, Safeco of Illinois vs. Safeco of America (or something like that). He may have gotten lower commissions, but he retained a client while I saved money. Farmers was a bit higher the last time I checked. I just got a solicitation from Costco about the outfit that pays them for referrals--I need to check that. Do shop around.

I’ll have to keep an eye out on our bill. When we went from our 2015 Prius four to the 2017 prime advanced our insurance only went up $6-$8 a year for identical coverage.

Any modern car has similar fairings front and aft, so I'm being unfair pointing the finger at Prime. Still, I think the carbon hatch is pricey? Also the Rear window glass?

I'm thinking the sensors mounted in the bumpers and fairings for the advanced safety features.

Insurance rates go up because of the worst 30% of drivers. You're basically paying for the bad drivers so if there's a bunch of shity drivers causing a bunch of expensive accidents everybody's insurance will go up
