Leaf: faster acceleration, no gas stations, no oil changes, 360 degree camera, Android Auto, heated steering wheel, cheaper per mile for me, more cargo room

Prime: lighter, handles better, interior feels a little nicer, lower cost, better range and speed to fill up, great resale value

Nice, glad you're liking the Leaf. At least we can cross Android Auto off the list for 2021!

No one's had any trouble getting the Uber $750 off just for paying cash right? I had one dealership refuse to give me the rebate because I wasn't financing - normally I would have just done it, but I'm looking to buy another home soon.

Here is my prius prime saga. I know this cant go on forever, eventually 200K will be sold and the tax credit will go away. The 5K rebate will go (I think) On top of the fact that the uber rebate may go away as well.

All cars listed are prius prime LE with as few additions as possible bought at different dealers in NY. NY has an 1100 state rebate.

    Spring of 2020:
2020 LE MSRP of 28178. Discount was only 700 with 4600 rebate (3K from toyota, 1100 from NY). Price 23418. NY doesnt have crazy document fees. Trade was a 2019 leaf for 17K. Balance owed after taxes was 7,546.94. I made money on the leaf bc had huge discount when bought plus electric company gave 5K rebate at the time. This was the worst of my deals though. Now the fun begins

Fall 2020: Trade prime LE for 23K with 7K miles. Purchase price for new 2020 LE was 28263 (honestly dont remember the MSRP but somewhere in the mid-29K range bc of special color but the 23K trade is what made it work) then take out 6350 for rebates (4K, 1100 from NY, and 750 for uber) After taxes the price was 22,491, but my trade was 23K so I made 5K, the 4500 tax credit plus the 500 bucks on the trade

Winter of 2020: trade prime LE for 22K with 3K miles and puchase 2021 LE. 2021 was 28692 before rebates but with tax. After rebates of 5850 (1100 NYS, 750 uber, 4K toyota) it was 842 out the door. Profit of 3658 (4500-842)

Winter 2021: Sell 2021 prime with 2K to online buyer for 25K. Purchase 2021 LE for 22420 with tax and fee. MSRP was 29553 but 6850 in rebates (5K toyota, 750 uber, 1100 NYS). 7,080 profit (4,500 plus the car sale difference of 2,580)

Spring 2021: Sell 2021 prime with 3K to online buyer for 24K. Purchase another 2021 LE for 22,555.50 (same deal as above with a 2703 discount, price just higher c MSRP was 100 bucks more)

I have enough tax liability to cover around 15K in tax liability so I was able to claim the whole 13500 on my 2020 returns.

We are kind of in the same boat ... we don't NEED a car until October (and even then don't really need one as we have a 3rd car now), but I'm worried the incentives might go away with the price of gas going up. Overall though I just think the Prius has fallen out of favor, so should be OK. $4000-4500 is pretty close to the top as far as rebates (I think it was up to $5000 out East once).

I have purchased Primes in Oregon and California and used the Uber $750 discount with no issues. One was all cash, the other was pre-arranged financing with a credit union. I plan on doing it again in November when I upgrade my 2020.

It is hard to tell, what are you getting for dealer markdown from MSRP?

for the first two I sold it was around 1K but I had 23K and 22K for the trades so that offset nearly 2K in taxes each time.

For 2021s purchased in winter and spring of 2021, the discount was 2703 each time

Could I have a deal check y'all? This is for an LE in Portland, OR.

    MSRP $29,384
    Discount $1,983
    Total Rebates $5,250 (w/ Uber)
    Fees: $457
    -------------
Cost for car before sales tax and tax credit: $22,608

Trade in on 2020 Chevy Bolt LT - $16,700 (Carvana offering $18,100 but this trade is offsetting 9% sales tax)
Net taxes on balance - $995
    --------------
Final price for deal before tax credit - $6,903

I may be able to get them to come down another $400 to match a deal I found from someone else on a color I didn't want.

I would tell them you have an offer from Carvana for $18,100. You'll meet them halfway, so your out of pocket will be $6000. Did you get other trade in quotes from another dealer in the area?

I did, nobody wants my Bolt :( This was the second highest trade in offer. The next one was from Toyota of Portland, but they refuse to give me the $750 Uber credit unless I finance. Oddly, they also refuse to charge me sales tax unlike every other dealer, even knowing I'm in WA, and they only have the LE in Red (which my wife hates).

They're also aware of the sales tax benefit of trading in - this saves me enough tax to hit the Carvana offer, so it's not like I'd be ahead of anything if I sold to Carvana first.

I recently upgraded from a 2020 Prime to a 2021 Prime. I live in New York state. I received the $1100 "drive clean rebate" both years. I own the 2020 for 14 months. Technically you need to keep the car for 36 months when you claim this rebate.
I'm assuming I'm going to have to repay a portion of the rebate (from 2020). I'm not sure if I will be contacted from NY state? or is it my responsibility to report this to NY state?

Hello Steve D. - and others who know - it appears you are planning to file for multiple Federal Tax credits in the same tax year? Is this correct? I thought I had read you could only get one federal tax credit $4552 - per year - but maybe that's not correct? Thanks for clarifying.

Also - I was able to get the Uber $750 for a cash sale in Maryland 2 weeks ago.

You can claim more than one plug-in credit as long as you have enough tax liability. Meaning if your tax liability is less than $4502, then you can only get that much back no matter how many qualified plug-in vehicles you purchased in that year. It is a non-refundable tax credit, and the unused portion will not roll-over to the next tax year.
