I was driving my gen 2 prius this evening on the freeway when suddenly the gas pedal stopped doing anything. I pulled over as fast as I could while losing speed quickly. When I stopped, the car sputtered and died. Just had an oil change and regular service this past week.

Red triangle came up, hybrid indicator came up, and the main battery indicator came up.

Car still turns on and goes into ready mode, tries to charge the battery, but stays on one bar. The engine then sputters and kicks before turning off. Checked the 12v with the display check method. 12v when in ACC, 14.4v when in ready mode.

250k miles on the car, hybrid battery was replaced in 2017 with a reconditioned one, which lasted way longer than it was supposed to.

Is that all that needs to be done, replace the hybrid battery again? Or is there another issue?

About how long would you say the engine spins, before it sputters and kicks and turns off?

Have you checked oil (and coolant) levels?

There are lots of "could be's" here. Could be an inverter problem. Could be an engine problem (when was the last time you filled up the gas tank?) Could be a HV battery problem.

If there are warning lights on, then there should be diagnostic trouble codes set in the ecu's that control those lights. You would need a capable scantool to read them (most scantools can't communicate with all the ecu's on a Prius).

    For about one minute.

It tries to charge the battery, but it doesn't work, then it shuts down.

Oil change and all coolant/fluid levels checked less than a week ago.

Gas tank filled two days ago.

No check-engine light? Sure sounds like the kind of situation that would post a P3190.

Just tried to turn it on again. Goes into ready, ICE tries to kick in, but makes a loud noise, sputters and dies.

Those various warning lights all indicate that there are trouble codes present, but different scan tools have very different abilities to retrieve all codes from a Prius; we have a thread that compares several of them.

Ideally, the local shop will have a scan tool that is able to retrieve the codes.

The mechanic replaced the air filter when he changed the oil.

I posted a similar - though not the same - issue today after getting an oil change and engine air filter replacement yesterday. My car had all the dash lights, but continued to operate normally. Initial reading at the service center is an issue with the inverter coolant pump. I’ll hopefully learn more tomorrow… watching this thread, good luck!

Have you checked the engine for oil?
