How hard is it to steal a Prius? On that point, how many Priuses (what -is- the plural of "Prius"?) get stolen each year-- what's their ranking relative to other cars?

I ask because I've had a Teletrac device in my cars for years (first in my steadfast Avalon, now in my Prius). I'm less concerned about the actual car-theft as I am about losing my personal junk inside, fwiw. Teletrac is moving over to a GPS-based system on June 1st (2009) and I'm trying to figure out whether it's worth the $350 to upgrade my unit to the new GPS-system. If I don't upgrade I'm essentially terminating my account (no more Teletrac).

Teletrac won't save me from a smash-and-grab, but if Prius cars are not that steal-able, maybe I should just save the cash. Thoughts?

From what I've read they're really hard to steal. You must drag them up with wheels skidding onto a flatbed tow truck. Then you must find somebody who will reprogram a key, which is not easy nor cheap.

Your "personal junk" should be covered under your renters or homeowner's insurance. You may want to check with your insurance provider.

It's the "personal" part of personal junk that I'm concerned with. I know-- don't leave it in the car if you don't want to risk it, but ever since I had an autographed CD stolen and a notebook lost, I've been paranoid about it happening again.

Still, I'm beginning to appreciate the "save your money" arguments! Thanks!

There are lots of great places to hide things in the Prius, including the "secret" storage compartment under the console cup holder, and the storage compartment under the rear cargo area.

Just be certain to hide stuff "before" you get to your destination. Thieves can sit in parking lots, watching for people to put stuff in their trunks, etc.

I'm embarrassed to admit that it was a full year before I discovered the secret compartment in the trunk! Imagine my surprise! But those are good ideas. Thanks for the suggestions!

Don't carry irreplaceable CDs in the car, in fact don't carry any original CD. You are legally allowed to burn a back-up CD, so only use burned CDs in the car.

I think Prius is the most not stolen car.

The plural of Prius is Prius. That's my opinion anyway.
The plural of sheep is sheep, see it isn't all that strange.
Toyota never call a group of Prius or a fleet of Prius really anything but Prius. If you want to know how to pronounce a kids name ask the mother, right?
Prii, Priuses, Prius's, nup, just Prius!
