I'd like to remind folks that such a crash is HIGHLY dangerous. Most MV circuit reclosers will attempt to reclose to "clear" the fault, and the timing can be anywhere from 20 seconds to several minutes. The recloser will usually be programmed to attempt to reclose on the short several times before it locks out

Never ever attempt to exit the car unless you are in grave danger - eg car on fire. Just because the sparks stop, don't assume the lines will STAY unenergized

Also, never ever attempt to approach such a scene unless you have had proper training. Again, just because the sparking has stopped, never assume the lines will remain unenergized

jayman speeks the truth ... put in super duper simple terms:

whether it be power poles or lightning ... people make GREAT G.F.I.'s

    [IMG] [IMG] [IMG] [IMG] [IMG]

should you HAVE to exit your car ~ JUMP away from your car ... jumping FROM your car, Do NOT step out first ... then shuffle away ... don't take large strides as this could put each foot in a different voltage zone and end up electrocuting you. Sheesh ... such happy thoughts ... I'm sure walking on sunshine now.

That said ... DON'T presume downed power lines ARE shut down or WILL shut down for even an intermittent period:
