Could be a lose wire or the MFD is failing. It's under warranty, so it's time for a dealer visit.

The multi function display in the center of the dash is also a touch screen, so you can input basic things like selecting a HVAC mode

There have been incidents of 2004-2006 mfd's failing due to a bad solder joint at a connector, but that should have been resolved long before your car entered production

I agree take it to the dealer. Maybe the connector has wiggled loose somehow. If you're curious I can post schematics of the mfd?

Probably something in the link between the MFD (the AVC-LAN bus) and the gateway ECU which converts information to and from the other buses in the car, or the gateway ECU itself.

(Bus: an electronic engineering term for a, normally multi-way, formatted connection between multiple devices, structured so that devices can be added and removed without modifying any devices already connected to the bus.)

You could go into the MFD diagnostics and see if there are any faults recorded on there. To do this, put the car in ACC mode. With the car off, press the power button once, with your foot off the brake pedal. The light on the power button goes green. Then press the Display button beside the MFD. You should see a screen that looks like this:

That's actually from a 2001 Prius but the 2004-2009 display is nearly the same. The interior of the frame will depend on what view you had before you pressed the Display button.

Divide the area inside the 'frame' into quarters. Press in the top-left quarter, then in the bottom left, and repeat two more times. The screen should swap into the Diagnostics menu.

Leave the screen alone for about ten seconds while it retrieves codes. If a device is good, it could be addressed with no stored codes, the indicator by that device name will show a green OK. Otherwise it shows an orange CHEK, EXCH, NCON or NRES. That gives some idea where the problem is. EXCH indicates a stored DTC that means the unit should be exchanged (replaced). CHEK indicates a stored DTC that indicates some other problem. NCON indicates that the unit has been seen before but isn't responding to the diagnostic mode. NRES means it is responding but didn't report either good or a specific problem.

Tapping one of the orange indicators shows what the stored problem code is. It may be possible for us to pinpoint the problem if you post what these codes are.

Tapping LAN Mon goes into LAN (Local Area Network) monitor mode. I'm not sure what the difference is - possibly it's monitoring continuously rather than a one-time check, could be better for intermittent problems. Here it shows NoErr if no problem has occurred, or CHEK, NCON or NRES as before. Again, tapping the error indicator reveals the actual codes. The format is a bit different from before.

Press and hold Display for five seconds to exit diagnostics mode. From ACC mode, pressing the power button once more enters IG-ON mode (orange light on the power button), then pressing again turns the car off.

My car seemed to be reporting a problem, but it was actually left-over from the dealer leaving one of the fuses unplugged when initially connecting the 12V battery. You might find that some codes relate to something like this, rather than your actual problem.
