I tried to upload a small JPG to be my profile picture, but I keep getting a message that the upload failed. I think it needs to be an avatar file (what is that). How do I convert the JPG to avatar?

There are two ways you can add an avatar picture (and it does not matter whether it's a JPEG file ... almost all the avatar pics you see here on PriusChat -- including MINE -- are JPEG files):

    1. If the pic is on the net, then type in the pic's URL address.

    2. If the pic is on your computer, then browse your computer and upload it.

With either method, there is a size limitation of 150 by 100 pixels or 19.5 KB (whichever is smaller), so you may have to resize the image yourself before trying to bring it in as an avatar.

As Boo said, you probably have to resize it.

You can do this on the web very easily and for free here:
    Resize Images online

    All you do is:
    1. click on "browse" and navigate to your pic.
    2. enter 150 in Custom box
    3. select effects if you like
    4. select image quality, can be lowest for an avatar but if good is small enough go for that

Click on "resize" and hold your breath. Then it will give you a link to download it, do that and then use that pic for your avatar.

Thanks to everyone. It turned out I was uploading into the wrong area. It needs to be uploaded in "Edit Avatar" and not "Edit Profile Picture" -- at least that's what I found.

The Profile Picture and Avatar are not the same things, so that makes sense.
