Ok, who's gotten into a good old fashioned tangle?

...and what I mean by "fight", is not some brief pushing and shoving, I'm talking going at it, exchanging punches while a crowd forms around you, that sort of thing....

    Me:

I think I've been involved in about 6 or 7 bru-ha-ha's in my life. Mostly in middle school, and twice in highschool. The high school ones were the best, in one, I got my arse kicked by my opponent and his gang (I'm sure some people here would have loved to see that one! ), the other was an awesome blow-blow exchange, we're talking cheering crowd around two people just going at it, after an array of minor punches, I got hit twice in the head, and in return, landed one big one right on the kid's cheekbone, and it was over! Since then, things have been relatively quiet, except for a certain situation back in January of 2004 when I tried to get my ex gf's then current bf to tangle, he just sort of put his head down and walked quickly into a store.... There is something about fighting though, the fear, the adrenaline, the way your perception changes as you're engaged in a fight with another human being...

I used to kick around when I was young and stupid. I don't know or care to count how many. It's not that I was looking for fights it's just that I refused to stand down. Being the youngest of five boys, my brothers raised me pretty tough. They tended to piss me off quite a bit and I knew nothing but rage for most of my teenage years continuing into my 20s. I could never beat them in a fight but sparing with them made me better with people "my own size." Also working against me at that time was that I felt comfortable in dive bars: the ones where there's sawdust, dirt, and the occasional drunk on the floor at all times. The ones with the little clock on the door reading, "the next knife fight will be at 7:15."

Sometimes I look back and wonder how that was ever me. What I've come to realize was that I never thought I was tough or had anything to prove to anyone. It had more to do with the fact that at the time I just didn't care. If someone got in my face and I had a little to drink, I knew that however it turned out, whatever happened, I just didn't care. Like I said, I didn't seek anything out it's just that sometimes when people get drunk and you bump into them they have to act all tough and get in your face to claim their "alpha dog" place. I just sort of had that "maybe you are maybe you're not but you'll have to prove it" mentality. I can't say for certain what it was that finally woke me up but I'm glad something did and am often surprised that except for some lingering emotional scaring I'm pretty much no worse for wear.

My brother and I used to beat the crap out of each other when we were younger... actually, even now he sometimes deserves a good beat down, but I'm too old... and I'd probably get my butt kicked, as he's bigger and into Rugby so I just yell at him. Other than this, no. I've never been in a fight. I think it's tacky.

I just ordered (and then watched) the out-of-print, special edition Fight Club DVD. I read on imdb that when the guy is spraying the Priest with the hose, that the camera man was laughing and you can see the camera wiggle.

I loved that scene before and love the scene even more; when the Priest just hauls off and decks the guy.

Tyler Durden is right, most people, NORMAL people, will do everything in their power to avoid a fight. But not the Squid!

    ...and why should we? Seriously?

...because "good" people are "civilized"? I'm human, hate, remorse, happiness, etc., are all part of our genetic makeup, why should they be supressed? Fight or flight, we can't change that. Sure, that doesn't mean let's all of a sudden get up and start picking fights  , but at the same time, teaching that fighting is wrong, unacceptable, or uncivilized, I think, is wrong. That sort of thinking is only structured to protect those that either can't or won't fight for any reason.

...and hey, you take the good with the bad, I'm sure there are plenty of people out there that could kick my arse, and conversely, I'm sure there are plenty out there whose arses I can kick...! I think it should almost be a "mandated" right of passage growing up, instead of avoiding a fight in school, get in there, and do your best. Yeah, you might very well get the crap beaten out of you, or you might easily level your opponent, but at least you'll know what it feels like to engage in low level violence with another human being.

I'll gladly take you up on that, Squid. The next time I'm in Boston, we'll go to your favorite pub, I'll buy us a round of drinks, and we'll thumb wrestle all night to determine superiority!

MS. you would love to live with the Yanomani tribe in S. America, where people have not yet discovered fire and young men are highly unlikely to live to adulthood before they are stabbed or clubbed to death. Just think, no electricy, no computers, no priuschat! Sounds like a lot of fun!

You just said it, fight or flight. More most people fighting "costs" too much. It's easier, and safer, to stand down. At it's core I don't think is has to do with "good" or "civilized".

Of course, there will be lot more violence in a society where fighting is a normal and "healthy" way of sorting out disputes. Given the number of people who own guns do you really want to feed the beast? Creating a culture of violence without an authoritarian control mechanism (military discipline, for example) is a recipe for disaster. Read On Killing. It talks about just that.

Not that I endorse any religion (far from it) but it does seem that some religions/cultures are less violent than others, just as some species are less violent than ours. Buddhist countries do seem less violent, or is it my imagination? At least the Buddhist ideal is complete non-violence. Got to like that. I enjoy "pretend" violence - for example the movie the Road Warrior, but real violence is nothing like that. It isn't heroic or exiting - just sickening, depressing and disgusting. So why don't we end war and make lots of war movies instead? In a similar vein, lets get rid of guns and give everyone paintball guns instead. MS would love it.

Squid and I have exchanged a few verbal blows in the past and on occasion I too had wished he'd just go away though I really will buy him a drink some day. However, he never said that he was leaving. In his "It's over" thread, he indicated that he would stand down his attacks. I think he has. He still posts topics which are not exclusively Prius related, such as this one, but so far he has not been the one attacking other posters. His questions that you have quoted stimulated discussion in an open forum. But to reiterate: he's not the one naming names; he's just sparking discussions.

Everyone has a right to express their personal opinion and belief - that's what makes this an open forum and not a dictatorship where every post if moderated and approved prior to publication (and those boards do exist). When Squid falls back to his old tricks of attacking posters, I will call him on it. He knows I will because like I've said, we've had words publicly and privately in the past. But I ask that until that day comes: lay off and stick to the topic at hand.

Sounds like the Amish except they get a chance to survive an appendicitis attack.

And no fire - how do they cook their meat, especially if you like it well done?

You say "ulikely" - was that because you meant uNlikely to live to adulthood. I wonder what the average life expectancy is.

And imagine no social security - how do the elderly live off the young? Or do they just go into the forrest and serve as lion bait??

And I am sure they would get clubbed to death if nature were allowed to have another tribe next door be able to :D

And no priuschat - seriously - who is there to annoy them with self serving verbal diarrhea and intellectual dishonesty

No computers - you mean no porn - all they have is what we see each month in National Geopgraphics - which was more than enough for me when I was little kid

Do they believe in a higher being  Didn't mean to go there - sorry.

    Have a nice day.

I had the impression he was leaving - sounded like that. (And I thought I read carefully)

He is actually one of the more intelligent posters, in my opinion. He always admits there is a 5% chance of being wrong. (I only admit to 1%) :)

This I totally agree with, you're absolutley right. It's kind of like speeding, yeah we all shouldn't do it, and if we encouraged speeding, or even spoke positively about it, every Tom, Dick, and Harry, would be out there thinking they could drive at 100+...

...so you sort of do it anyway on the DOWN LO ( ), personally, without really advertising it...

heh, I did want to address obsessed with guns though... Of that entire thread, I was like the one who knew LEAST about guns, it was just a one day event, I don't own any guns, and never really intend to (well, ok, MAYBE a 12 gauge :D )... I just like to stick my finger in as many different pies as I can on my short time here......

To answer your other question, HECK NO!
