Putting an auxiliary audio input into a new Prius

I'm looking into buying a new Prius. A must for me is an auxiliary audio input for an mp3 player (I can't stand FM transmitters). It looks like the stereo is very integrated into the Prius dashboard, so putting in a basic aftermarket HU w/imput would be kind of messy and ugly.

So, I'm looking for ways to add one otherwise. I came across this solution online. Has anyone tried this, and does it work with the newer Priuses? Does anyone have photos? Are there other workable solutions out there?

Also, is there any chance that the upcoming 06 model would have an aux input option from the factory? GM just added this to their 06 vehicles and I'm hoping others will follow suit. It would seem the Prius demographic would be one most likely to have mp3 players...

    Thanks.

Your link points to the XM radio. Yes, the XM radio from Coastal works with the Prius.

I think though you were referring to the link at the bottom of the page pointing to http://www.coastaletech.com/viewtech_2005.htm
Which is a 2 input audio/video interface. This will work with anything. It will take quite a while for you to get. Many here have pre-ordered it, but it hasn't arrived yet.

I understand there's that new A/V input system on backorder, but I was referring to the simpler solution referenced on this page.

(Sorry, I screwed up the link last time).

This seems different than the newer, more expensive A/V input box. Do you have any information on what is mentioned below? Will it work on newer Priuses? I have no use for video inputs.

    The text follows:

    Radio Auxiliary Input

Many Prius owners have struggled to hook up aftermarket DVD, MD and CD players, satellite radios, MP3 players, etc. because the factory radio system does not accommodate sound input from any of these devices.

    Well now it can!

CoastalEtech now has two additional systems which allow you to bring sound into your Prius either with or without a factory CD player installed!

If you do not have a factory CD player, you can plug in the adapter and connect it to any type of player you would like. The adapter has standard RCA jacks for left and right inputs and is an easy plug-in installation to the radio. To operate the unit, you simply press the CD button already on your dash and the sound from your accessory will play throughout the car. This device will eliminate the poor sound quality and need for FM modulators, which prior to this, was the only way to add components.

If you already have a factory single or 6 disk CD player, we have a kit for that as well! This adapter replaces the cable to the CD player, with one that allows left and right inputs from any of your accessories. A dash mounted switch is included which allows you to easily select either the sound from your CD player, or the sound from your desired accessory. The switch mounts perfectly using cutouts already present in your dash, thus maintaining a clean factory look.

Both of these kits allow your sound to be heard as it was meant to be! Without the reduced quality of an FM modulator. Installation instructions are included and provide step-by-step guidance with color photos.

    With CD Player $110.00 Purchase
    Without CD Player $125.00 Purchase

I am interested in obtaining one of these radio aux input devices too. but i just checked coastaletech website and there is nothing priced at $110, only the one for $299 that is not available yet. I would appreciate any information on this item. I just got a fm transmitter at radio shack so i can hear radio programs that are put on cassette for me. but i haven't tried it yet. most of the messages i have read on this site are very disappointed in the quality when using fm transmitters. thanks for your help.

Ah, I see the problem with the link you have. Remove the trailing period after htm, it is causing issues.

I would suggest calling Coastal. I believe there were issues with it working on an '04/05, possibly the JBL systems with 6 disk changer.

There's no answer or voicemail at coastal; I shot them an email.

Are you saying that on 04/05 models it might only work with the changer, or that there are issues with the changer, and it might work only on the basic system?

Might only work on basic system. It might be emulating the changer. Some other branded aux-in boxes I think didn't work, though I may be confused with the ipod modules.

You'll note that the website you reference is for the earlier prius ('03 and before); not the '04-'05 prius. I would expect that if it worked on the new models, coastaletech would duplicate it on their '04-'05 page, which they haven't. So I expect it would not work on a new prius.

If you're looking for ipod compatibility, ipod2car works great. It is not a generic aux in, though.

I found this PDF that explains how to hook up an AUX-BOX type system in an 04 Prius. As far as I can tell you can buy the device from places such as this.

It seems to state that you can do this with the basic stereo (i.e., the changer input is present even in factory single-disc models).

Has anyone had luck with this? How much might a car stereo specialist charge to install this?

The part I don't get is why the old Coastal system woudn't work on new Priuses. As I understood it it simply split the speaker wire to have it run from both the Aux in and the existing factory stereo, with a switch on the dash to go between the two. It had nothing to do with the changer port or controls, it was a simple A/B switch like you might find at Radio Shack to add 2 things to your TV. Why would that not work on new models?

The FM Transmitter I got from Radio Shack for $20 two years ago did not work very well AT ALL. However, the Belkin Tunecast II from Circuit City (for ~$50) works good enough to satisfy me until a better aux in solution comes into production.

My EE friends are amazed that there isn't a plug and play solution for the aux in problem. Especially in light of the XM solution.

Coastal's box connects to the port behind the radio. It connects to the preamp in the radio, not to the speaker outputs.

Also, the later Toyota radios are part of the AVC network technology, where all devices on the network have specific IDs. That's how you get MFD and steering wheel control of them. The MFD has an ID, the header has an ID, the NAV has an ID, the JBL amp has an ID, the optional XM receiver has an ID and the gateway that connects the AVC to other networks in the car has an ID. Actually, the radio has a few IDs, for the different audio sources it has. The MFD supports 2 different CD sources, and many of thes aux boxes emulates one of the two CD IDs. If the aux box ID conflicts with the internal CD ID on the header, you have a problem. If you already have an external changer along with the built-in single CD, you have both IDs in use, and you can't have an aux box unless it emulates some other audio source ID that is recognized by the header and MFD, and is not already in use.

FYI, the site chrisdragon.com is down now, so i made a mirror of his wonderful step by step guide to installing the aux-box in a 2004 prius (will also work for 2005, and 2006).

the mirror is below, and it will remain indefinitely. if for some reason i take down my website, just google "prius aux-box install pdf" and you should be able to find another mirror:

I'm stumped why that wouldn't work, too.

I have an 04 (fully loaded) Prius, and really want to add an aux input. The links on this thread are dead. Does anyone have any newer links?

    Thx,
    Greg
