Someone has already posted this question, but it never got answered - my manual states that 3.9 QUARTS of oil are needed for a change of oil and filter - and lets keep it quarts because that's how most service centers refer to it. How come most posts in this forum recommend 3 quarts with a little topping off. If someone could explain this I would be very satisfied - thank so much.

3.9 quarts takes it at least to the top of the full marker on the dipstick. I fill mine with 3.5 quarts, which takes it about 2/3 of the way up between fill and full marks. This is of course with a filter change. I change every 10,000 miles (Amsoil 0/20) and it only drops down to about the 1/3 point without adding any inbetween. Currently almost at 80,000 miles.

Is this what you were looking for? 3 qt. sounds pretty minimal to me.

they say 3 quarts so you dont overfill but they dont suggest you stop at 3

I put in somewhere around 3, wait a bit a run the car, then check it and usually add another half

the second time i check it its usually fine so i never get up to the full 3.9

Just bang in 3.5 quarts, I don't know why people mess with the run before adding the last pint thing, you know it will take another pint!

No it's a ancient American unit of volume equal to 32 fluid ounces, what ever they are. It's fairly close to a litre if you want a universal reference, I think a litre is about 33 fluid onces from distant memory of the release of the one litre coke bottle here in the early 70s. The previous family size bottle was 26 fluid ounces.

In my Prius adding 3 US quarts during an oil change has always left the level halfway between the add and full marks on the dipstick. That is both plenty and convenient. The one time I did it adding another half quart filled it to the top.

The reason for the confusion is this: if the statements in the owner's manual are correct the dry capacity of the system is 3.9 quarts. Adding 3.9 quarts during an oil change does not allow for oil which remains in the system (in the bottom of the sump and coating the interior surfaces), so that results in an overfill. This is consistent with the markings on the dipstick. It is not consistent with the service manual, which says to add 3.9 quarts. Why these apparent inconsistencies have not been resolved and corrected by Toyota after four years is a mystery.
