I noticed that at certain times on the power display it has the motor/generator both sending power to the wheels and the battery. This seems impossible to me unless there are separate windings, one for driving the motor and one for generating power. Does anyone have a explanation for this?

The eCVT function requires two separate motor/generators, MG1 and MG2. Power does not flow directly from one to the other, it passes first through AC/DC/AC converters. When some power also flows into the battery, it is diverted from the middle of that conversion process.
