Question for those that have the windshield screen sold in the ShopPrius

Apparently the color choices are gold exterior / black interior OR silver exterior / white interior.

For reasons I won't bore you with, I need to have black exterior. I really have no interest in the heat blocking aspects. I just need to have black facing out.

I'm thinking I could just turn the windshield screen around, thereby showing black to the exterior (and gold to the interior).

Before I spend the cash, is there any reason this would not work? I know that there is a little flap for the small port window on the side and I have some concerns that the flap might not bend the opposite direction.

    Thanks!

If I could understand exactly why you need black (about the absolute worst colour to shield heat) then perhaps I could attempt to answer your strange question! o_O ;)

EDIT: OK I just re-read your question, and I missed the fact that you weren't worried about heat, in which case, I'd recommend a flat-matt-black, or perhaps a vinyl coat?
    …naaaaaah, forget that - I didn't realize they come in black/gold!
…and PS: the flaps bend with no problems - I have a couple of the SunShields (front & rear) as available in Ye Olde Prius Shoppe! - Good Luck! ;)

The whole windshield shade is soft and flexible but of course it's meant to roll inwards (so the silver or gold side facing out when it's rolled up and stored). The large windshield part may stay in the place but the flaps may need a little help either in the form of tape or velcro.

    Thanks guys!

For reasons I also won't bore you with -- the shield will never be rolled up.

So it sounds like y'all are saying this will -- probably -- work and is worth taking a risk on buying it.

I strongly expect that "need" is the wrong word and it should say "want".

You might change your mind the first time you go to remove the black-facing-out shade in the summer time and burn your hand because it is so HOT.

I have the silver/white one for my windshield. I see no reason it wouldn't work backwards, although it might be a little more awkward putting it in place. I cannot fathom, though, why anyone would want it black side out.

Why not just buy a roll of black fabric from Michael's or similar craft store if you're not going to use the windshield for its heat reflecting properties?

(Also, making a statement like "I won't bore you with the details" makes us very curious lol)

More like a construction site where they have the shaded fencing :).

    I know I want to see what’s going on(y).

Prius urban camping -- need to be stealthy at night.

I've made exact-fit shades for the other windows from black plastic twinwall sheets (https://tinyurl.com/black-twinwall) and may still do so for the front, but the windshield is so large and considering the two side ports it might be easier to purchase pre-made.

When passing by, black facing out at night looks just like nothing there. Stealthy! An obvious heat shield is not so stealthy when its cold outside.

    Those are the boring details!

Thanks. Good thinking. I don't think that's boring at all. ;)

Well I think you are overlooking one VERY important consideration by not looking at the big picture.

You said that you intend to leave the shades in place all the time.
When summer rolls around, all that black material you have inside the windows will turn your "living space" into a virtual OVEN.......unless maybe you are parked in the shade.
Once the interior becomes "heat soaked" at temps that may reach 140F, it will be very difficult to cool down at night.

You may even be surprised at how hot it gets in the winter time if it is sitting in the direct sun on a clear day.

That would make driving difficult! :) I just said the shield would never be rolled up. All of my shields fit nicely under my mattress during the day. They are only up at night when the sun is down. With windows cracked (under a rain gutter) and a 12v fan (run off of a Lithium Iron Phosphate (LiFePO4) battery all night), I'm good. On really hot/cold nights, I just leave the Prius in ON mode for complete climate control.

I'm a huge sports fan and Prius camping has enabled me to stretch my budget to travel to A LOT more games. Plus, its actually fun! :)

    OK, last comment........I think.

Given the situation that you describe, I think your obsession with "stealth mode" is excessive and unnecessary.

But I DO understand your passion. I've got an RV to camp out at NASCAR races.

I don't get to park in the shade at work so even with a custom fitted windshield heat blocker thing, at times my Prius will not go to EV mode until I zip all windows up with AC running. Even after 8 hours straight of the vents running from solar panels, EV never came on after 20 mins of driving. I don't live in desert like conditions either.

In other words, the higher temp will put your hv battery in harsh environment and that should be a concern to factor in.

Good point. But apparently not applicable to the OPs situation.

It is good to note, however, that ANYTHING that you put inside the glass will not reflect all of the heat causing rays.
The blocking panel itself and the glass will still heat up some.
A reflector on the OUTSIDE of the glass would be much better........but just not practical.
