I just picked up my new Prius V 2018 and noticed that the rear lights are different to each other. I told the Toyota dealer (Australia) and was informed that this is how they are made in the factory. Is he telling the truth? It seems very odd. I am attaching a photo.

The car was ordered in December and arrived a couple of weeks ago in Australia.

(Toyota does not manufacture cars in Australia any more.)

As strange as it may seem, I believe so: it’s the same as in the rear photo seen on Toyota Australia’s Prius v web page; scroll down and look under the heading “A dynamic performer.” In the Owner’s Manual (PDF), a diagram on page 334 shows that one side has a back-up light and the other has a rear fog light.

Interesting but strange to me. Of course I am in the US so our 2016 Prius v Three has identical tail lights in back...

It does seem very odd. It looks like it was made with leftover parts.

Apparently rear fog lamp on right side only has been a factory option available for Prius alpha (Prius V for AU and US) sold in Japan for cold climate. Suppose to make it more visible during snow. I don't think it's available option for US Prius V though.

Great, thanks to everybody for your replies. Still odd - but it looks like it's legit.

There are a few cars in UK that is that assymmetrical rear light configuration. Our relations insist that she only one rear fog lamp is fitted it should be located on the offside of the vehicle, is farthest away from the nearside footpath/sidewalk (whatever)!

Thats completely normal, its a fog light, every country in EU requires fog light in the rear. Australia also, on the american version the fog light is a reverse light. In Norway rear fog light is not required, but all cars have it anyways... i swapped my taillights for valenti`s that dont got rear fog light (which is weird, the makers of the valnti taillights could easly install switchback LED bulbs in one of the reverse lights so it got dubbel function) im still gonna buy and install a E-certified LED fog light strip from Hella tho, in the middle of the bumper, from what i know u can place up to two fog lights in the rear wherever u want, atleast its like that here in Norway, pretty much no rules over rear fog lights here.
