Anyone know why the lower part of the rear window is tinted?

a guess is help keep cars headlights that is behind you from shinning into your car. :)

They have got to be close to shine through that window. If anyone got that close I would be seriously worried.

How can you tell it's Tinted..:)
actually a big pickup or some good driving lights shine right in there and not very close but in the prius it seems everyone is closer anyway

Then that tinting must be doing its job I never notice lights shinning through it.

I'm guessing it's for privacy. You can see out the lower rear window, but it's harder for someone to see in.

well, originally the brake light background was black so the tinting matched it. Now it's chrome.

I think it's more for style. The C-Class hatch (oops, coupe) has it tinted but the Euro Civic Hatchback's lower rear window isn't tinted.

That is a nice way for me to gauge how close the car behind me is. If their headlights are in the lower rear window, they start seeing my brake lights.

I presumed to make it harder to see the stuff hidden under the cover.

Yeah, but the tinted window is above the cover.

I'm guessing it's a style thing. Wasn't the Honda CRX the same way? From the outside, the lower window doesn't look like a window, which prevents it from looking weird.

The bottom rear window was tinted to afford clearer vision when looking back.

:D I guess the tinting is just for looks.
