At one time, anything over 300 miles, flying made sense over driving. Those of us with Prius, longer distances, and ordinary cars, shorter. With 9/11 security, the trade-off distance effectively doubled, 500-600 miles. But now if your destination is New York, you have to fill out a contact form and quarantine for two weeks. We can drive coast-to-coast, in 5-7 days.

idk if there are enough 'antimaskers' to keep the airlines in business. there's still a lot of fallout coming, delta just reported 2.8b loss, other smaller airlines are filing for bankruptcy.

our daughter used to fly from ny to san fran once a week, but her company has changed its policy going forward. no flying for the foreseeable future, and if we ever get through this, flights will be limited to annual meetings, etc.
they have been implementing zoom protocols internationally, and i know a lot of companies are doing this.

our other daughters company is considering closing all its offices worldwide, the working from home thing has been going so well.
there's going to be a lot of commercial real estate fallout as well.

    Interesting timing.

Tomorrow I will make one of my semi-occasional sojourns back to my beloved home state of Indiana - a more or less 600 mile trip one way.

Since I've been doing this for a number of decades from various places I've run the numbers many days and many ways, and it's NEVER made sense to me to fly when I'm east of the Rockies.
I'll probably be 'wheels in the well' before 0800 and I'll be regaling my kinfolk with tales from the South-land well BEFORE 1800,
I'll listen to a good Audiobook, (probably Forester's "The Good Shepherd") eat some reasonably priced road-side fare OF MY CHOOSING and timing, and arrive WITH ground transportation without having to involve myself with flying, the TSA, my fellow passengers (**) airports, etc.

    ...No
    Brainer....

    (**) Pro-tip.
Guaranteed way to get that gabby salesperson in the window seat to ignore you.
    Open a bible.....;)

    Safe travels!

My wife works for an airline and has had a tremendous amount of time off lately. We follow the industry and we anticipate massive layoffs in the Sept/Oct time frame.

I haven't had much cause to drive far lately but I did look into renting a motorhome to support an installation job in a distant city. Still not ruling it out, just didn't get a commitment on it yet.

They still do in the Deep South.
I suppose they have to allow you to read one (silently) while on commercial aircraft.
Only if you put an opaque cover on it more than likely.

Those intending to use it for social distancing need not fear.
The red verses, index tabs, and cloth place holder will alert the seasoned travelers to leave you be without triggering those who are easily offended.

    As always....

    Actual mileage may vary.

It's only when you insist other people live by your interpetition of the Bible do people start having an issue.

How about poking fun at the Hare Krishnas at the airport?

Is that too close to the drop-off?

    Reading a Bible is for
    • low COVID-19 source to high COVID-19 state - quarantine optional
      • East to West
    • high COVID-19 source to high COVID-19 state - quarantine optional
    • high COVID-19 source to low COVID-19 state - quarantine likely mandatory
      • West to East (perfect for Bible study;)
