I cracked the black frame piece around the driver side mirror on my 2006 Prius about a decade ago; nothing serious. But recently, knocked it again - this time parts of it shattered. I looked up replacing it online, and it looks like the whole mirror assembly is about $35, but since the whole door panel needs to be taken off to replace it, it's not something I'm comfortable doing myself; and the dealer would probably charge about $150 (to replace a $35 part). Is there any simple way to remove just the black rim -- I'd be fine with throwing away the $35 just for the rim; if it meant I didn't have to pay the $150 for labor. Any ideas? Oh, I do have the pieces, so could glue them back in; but not my favorite option.
No door panel comes of for mirror just the tweeter you mean for the plug . Go to LKQ and look at a Prius with the door panel off look at the receptacle where it's pinned in the car right on metal . So now with panel on you'll notice w long needle nose pliers you could pull receptacle off metal pull it to you I believe they're just enough room to unplug re plug new without removing that panel . But I'm so used to pulling the panel off it'll take me longer to fish it . The whole panel need not remove just lift away enough to unplug . Not any kind of work really. Cheap mirrors can be noisy junkyard originals are best if possible . Same with Stanley headlights and tails.
No, the easiest way is to remove the interior door panel, as you need to disconnect the wiring that feeds the mirror. You only need to remove a small portion of the waterproof membrane – just enough to allow you to disconnect the mirror cable – so take note of that. I have done it twice, the first time to practice (on my own car) to find out what was involved and what tools I would need before going off-site and doing it for real. I think I did it for the first time in about two hours, going slowly and carefully. When I did it the second time, it was less than an hour. If you consider yourself reasonably handy, you should be able to do it easily. It helps to have the manual excerpt, which I will attach. Good luck.
By "black frame" or "rim" do you mean just the actual black carrier piece that the glass sits in? (That one's from a gen 1, but I don't think they're much different.) If that's all you need, why, that's just the way Toyota sells the mirror glass piece, already stuck in that frame. Pop, unclip, clip, pop, done.
Thanks, dolj. I'll take a look at the manual, but the part that bothers me is removing 'clips' to release the door panel. The plastics are so old now, that clips tend to shatter instead of just releasing. Then, you're paying more money to replace clips; or the clips don't get replaced and things rattle. That's why I'm not comfortable with the procedure. For ChapmanF; unfortunately, it's the black rim around the assembly that the mirror pops into. I was hoping that since the painted hub pops off to allow for paint matching that the rim might come off separately as well; but doesn't appear to be the case. For Tombukt2; I'll double-check with the dealer, but the part I was quoted was a Toyota part. Thanks all for your information.
No they do not tend to break pulled a door panel just now to rob a door control. Just handle screw and door cup were lighter goes. Down by door light you feel a spot to get finger or scraper and pull bunch of pops heard door panels loose enuff for this job now.
