REPORT: GM's rumored 53 mpg Prius fighter canceled — Autoblog Green

Hmm, their source is Bloomberg/Businesweek at Honda's Prius-Fighter Is Stuck in First - BusinessWeek which wrote WAY less than ABG.

The only comment that's at Businessweek so far is some Insight owner who's picked up on some of the rumblings here...

Isn't it amusing how the first time you hear about "plans" like this is when they are cancelled?

Sounds like something was "promised" as part of the bankruptcy and now is just being abandoned without ever having actually done anything.

Anyone have any detail at all about this?

This matches the market research although I think the $100,000 a year number is a little high. Then there is this strange obsession with "classier ride:"

. . . it's not clear that the Insight will ever seriously challenge the Prius because Honda has overlooked a lesson Toyota learned years ago: Hybrids aren't a budget purchase.

Consider that many Prius owners make well over $100,000 a year. That means this group can afford a much classier ride than a fuel-efficient hatchback. According to Toyota's research, hybrid shoppers are looking for lots of leg room and creature comforts. Toyota upped the ante with the third-generation Prius, which rolled out about the same time as the Insight. The latest model features bigger, more comfortable seats, extra horsepower under the hood, and some Lexus touches inside.

product planners at America's largest automaker are diverting their attention away from a rumored dedicated hybrid sedan from Chevrolet that would compete directly with the Prius and back on other hopeful game-changing vehicles like the 2011 Chevy Volt, ultimately choosing to cancel plans for the rumored 53 mpg hybrid last November.

Game changing Volt. Give us a break. Yes, it's game changing if GM can bring it to market for less than $30K. Does anyone think that will happen?
