There are some really good congressional committe hearings going on at this time. I would love to see her get roasted. C-Span should do a best of episode.

I'd argue this is way too late, and since no one is going to prison anyway, it's an utter waste of resources.

Start focusing on the new administration coming in...

You must have me confused with someone else. I've never brought that one up. As a matter of fact, I think it was an utter waste myself...

Like murder, I don't think there should be a statute of limitations on propagating false information that was used as part of the justification to invade another country and start a war that has caused tens of thousands of deaths and many more serious injuries. And plenty of people knew the information was bogus a long time before it got into Bush's speech. I'm not saying that Rice herself knew at the time -- but that's the sort of thing they're trying to find out.

How exactly does one focus on the new administration coming in when we are still 20 months away from getting a new administration?

Well said. Make that 100,000s of thousands of deaths, the collapse of civil society into anarchy and a cost in excess of 1 trillion. All bases on a lie. But that is water under the bridge, right?

Not to nitpick, but I'm not sure I would describe what existed in Iraq under Hussein a "civil society". Free of the open violence by terrorists against the Iraqi people? Yes. Under the thumb of a violent dictator with no hope of any personal freedom or security? Also yes.

And is there any way to validate there have been a 100,000 deaths in Iraq caused by our intervention?

The people of that part of the world have been under the thump of a violent dictator or a Religious leader for 3000 years. I suggest that only they themselves can do something about it !!!!
Once they do that, then and only then, can we can help them build a stable society.

Prior to the US invasion, Iraq was stable. Neighbours did not kill each other. Children went to school. Things are much worse now.

I guess if you consider stable, no open violence, going to school, torture chambers used by husseins son's for entertainment, rape, murder, mass graves, and gassing the Kurds better, you are right.

Again, not to nit pick, but I wouldn't call that a "civil" society. Nor would I call any society where individual freedoms and basic rights are not allowed "civil".

Thank goodness we had good intentions, didn't act rashly, and took the time to consider the potential long term consequences and costs...or we'd **really** be feeling foolish now!

    ------------

Condi Rice has, to me, been kind of a question mark. On one hand (speaking as a bit of a feminist now) she's a *woman* for goodness sake, and I was hoping that we could expect better from her (I can already feel the onslaught of criticism for this remark)...and she's well educated and articulate (more or less), too...on the other, she really does come across as just another shill for the current administration, regardless of her gender...and I wonder why someone who seemingly could call her own shots chose to align herself with these folks...and then remain on board, rearranging the deck chairs, as the USS George W. Bush sinks more and more deeply into turbid waters.

    -------------

Regarding the 'civility' of Iraqi society, I ask again...if this has been going on for so long, why only now are we so concerned about it? 'Cause it's not the real issue behind the war.

What hot water? She's not going to testify.
    First; Executive privilege
    Second; 5th amendment

I just like the fact that the Dem's are now so busy with all these hearings that it completely stifels THEIR attempts to take away my civlil rights! (of course when they do it is for my own good!)

By that meaure the United States wasn't civil until the late 60s, when the civil rights movement finally forced the country to extend civil rights to blacks. And considering what the Cheney-Rove cabal and its sock puppet are doing with extraordinary rendition, torture, denial of habeus corpus, domestic spying and all their other depredations, I'd say the argument is solid as granite that this country STILL isn't civil.

It's to be admired that you think of such issues as concerning us all...instead of referencing everything against how it influences only yourself.

There is no excuse for denying women equal opportunities in all areas. However, there's also no reason to think that women, just by being women, are going to be better leaders than men. Indira Gandhi, Golda Meir, Margaret Thatcher, etc. Merely because the U.S. is too sexist to have had a woman president yet is no reason to expect Condi to be any better than a man who has managed to rise to the level she has.

On the other hand, I am surprised that someone as intelligent and articulate as she is should have aligned herself with such a prodigious pack of criminal morons.
