Safe to walk away from 07 Prius that's on and unlocked but with the SK in my pocket?

Anyone can drive it away; it will operate normally until turned off, it then won't restart unless the fob is back inside the car.

 

I think I read here that if you lock the doors manually then use the key in the fob to lock the drivers door it should work. and the car can be on in the ready

I have not tried that but I will tomorrow

 

I do that frequently; leave things powered up and lock the doors
with the metal key for a quick errand. Likely more economical than
taking the startup cat-warming cycle if I power down. It is annoying
that I can't use the RF clicker in that state, and I looked into
how one might re-enable that, but the functionality is buried deep
in the body computer so it would probably take a firmware fix.

Because people would do so inadvertently, run down their battery and/or get their car stolen.

I made this mistake at the car wash and the guy at the end of the line couldn't restart it. He was not happy.

 

The SKS system is a wonderful invention. Don't be lazy turn the car off lock it , run your 5 minute errand and get back into the car and start it. This is much safer than leaving it running where anyone can hop in and drive your baby away. The car will not restart the ICE if the car is warmed up with a long enough drive.

I've done it occasionally to save gas, as well.

At least, the way the car is designed, you can't lock you keys in the car. But you can lock it, if serious about leaving the car running on purpose, as we've done, by using the mechanical key. People have done it to keep their pets cool or warm, while leaving them in the car.
