It's not possible to knock the gearchange joystick from D to R during normal driving is it? For example, while cruising along the highway, if the shifter somehow got knocked from D to R, the car wouldn't attempt to shift into Reverse, would it?

What would happen is that the body, along with the seats, would rip off and slide forward for several feet, while the frame would race backwards. Accompanying this would be the sound of "Wah, Wah, Wah" and canned laughter.

Seriously you'd probably get some beeps and that's it.

I've tried this. I think the cut off speed is around 7mph. If you do go into reverse while below 7mph it will slow you down and go into reverse. Anything higher and the car will beep at you and do nothing. Or i think it might go into neutral. Its been a while since I've done that.

I actually had this happen in an early 90's Plymouth Sundance Duster. (Well, not the ripping off, the frame racing backwards, nor the wah wah wah with laughter). Was on an expressway ramp and something in the car knocked the shifter into reverse. The trans made a horrible sound. Quickly shifted it back to drvie, but wondered what sort of damage might have occured. Never noticed any particular issues that seemed related.

I've assumed my Prius would ignore the attempt to shift to reverse while traveling forward (and maybe scold me with a few beeps), but I haven't worked up the courage to try it yet. Same for pressing the power button while in motion (forward or reverse).

The Prius will ignore any silly transmission requests, or shift to neutral if you are persistent about it. You can also force a power down if you hold in the power button while moving.

I haven't tried it but I don't think you will want to either and that is pressing park button while traveling under the 7mph limit. You might actually break something. I do know pressing it a high speeds Will result in a beep.

You simply cock the steering wheel all the way around while hitting the parking brake. As the spin reaches about 180 degrees, release the parking brake and straighten the steering wheel. Now everything is perfect, you are going 70 mph in reverse . . . or am I remembering "Tokyo Drift?"

Yeah; I think it's definately possible to break something if you hit the 'Park' button below whatever the threshold is. I was driving someone somewhere and I wanted to stop in the roadway. I was slowing down (and mostly stopped) and reached over to push the "Hazard" light button. I was a little flustered, and hit the 'Park' button instead (Yeah, yeah. I know. They're really far apart. I said I was flustered :) ). I probably wasn't going much faster than 2 or 3 MPH, but the car went into Park and came to a very sudden stop. If it lets you go into Park at much faster speeds, I could imagine something getting really broken.

Haven't tried shifting to reverse while going at quick speeds forward, but I can confirm that briefly pushing the Power button will do nothing at moderate speeds. Holding down the Power button for a while will force a shut down and put the car in Neutral. You then have to come to a stop and put the car in Park before it will let you power on again.

As has been said before, over ~7 mph, the car will beep at you. The beep stands for: "Stop That" (I'm feeling kind today).

However, shifting from D to R three times within 2.7 seconds engages the warp drive engine. Please be sure the path ahead of you is clear for at least 3 light years. :)

What state is the "transmission" left in should you do this above the 5-7 mph safety limit.
Do you just roll along in neutral until you power back up or come to a stop?

I was told if you select Reverse while moving forward, the transmission would shift to Neutral. This is in the 2007 owners manual. Somebody try shifting and let us know, for sure.

Essentially, the computer will not allow the car to be damaged by doing this.

If you tried to shift from D to R while moving you would hear a beep and the car would shift to N. This according to the owner's manual.
