Tha past week a cargo ship sailing from Japan sank in ruff seas of the coast of Alaska. All 21 crew members were rescued by the Coast Guard, the ship was carring 5000 new Toyota's for delivery in the USA and Canada...Gee, I hope no one had their Prius on board! :(

Did it actually sink? Last I heard, it was listing to one side. If there is an update to the story, please post a link.

Some media reports conflict, but MSNBC reports that it was enroute from Japan to Vancouver. The report says 4813 vehicles were on board, but does not mention the manufacturer.

Aparently the ship is still listing (i.e. not sunk yet) and the cars are mostly Mazdas. See story here.

I'd read somewhere that there may be a way to right the ship, I don't think the insurance company is going to give up on it too fast. There's about $100,000,000 worth of cars there...assuming about $20k/car.

I bet that if I try hard enough I could come up with a pretty good joke about Priapus and a bunch of seamen.

Imagine, if you would, that the ship sinks and archaeologists find these cars many eons later... Would they still work? Will they wonder WTH it is, much like that ancient Greek mechanism/clock/machine, and who would in their right minds would burn the rare, raw, and worthless hydrocarbons as fuel?

Does anyone know how secure the cars are in the 'containers' they come in?

I was thinking that they probably are tied down to some extent, but at what angle do they smack up against the side of the box they are riding in... Are they all basically a bondo lovers dream come true if they can get them on dry land without dunking them first.

Yeah, but they're Mazdas. Boom Boom Zoom? :p

I think the 'containers' referred to in the article are watertight compartments between bulkheads in the ship. I can't imagine that each car comes in its own box. Still, I wouldn't want a car that's been for an ocean dip.

I do not know about this ship but most car carriers are drive on drive off.
Apparently the cargo (squuse pun) shifted so the cars could not have been tied down.
Even if they do save the ship, I would imagine that the cars are pretty well stove in by now.
    Anyone want some spare parts?

Yup, http://www.detnews.com/apps/pbcs.dll/artic.../607280371/1148 mentions at least 4700 Mazdas.
