with my IR thermometer as it seemed quite warm when I switched from the consumption screen to the energy screen and with the OAT at 80F the MFD read 118F. This after about 20 minutes of operation. Anybody else shoot their MFD? What readings are people getting?

I haven't shot my screen yet but that temperate sounds about right especially for an in car touch screen. I know mine gets pretty hot and I have been meaning to shoot it to see what it runs at but I haven't had the time. I know the LCD screens at work have a temperature of 109F to 115F.

my flat screen runs about 105F-109F most of the time. The MFD just seems to run hot.

Around +45 C is a normal operating temp for LCD operator screens from A-B / Rockwell. I would suggest it depends on the backlight method used, the driver circuit, etc.

Industrial touch screen operator stations that are intended for use in unheated spaces, or outside, are equipped with heating elements, as most LCD's fail to operate at temps much below -20 C. Likewise, aviation displays (PFD/MFD like Honeywell Primus/EPIC) are usually equipped with heaters. When the heater is on, the temp can exceed +50 C

I haven't shot my MFD but now that you've caught my curiosity, in 4 weeks when I'm back to work I'll borrow one of the IR units and test my MFD. I'm only in Winnipeg for a couple of days to attend a wedding: I never turn down free booze and free food

Whew! From the topic title I thought maybe you had gone postal at your wife's precious car! Glad to see it was only a thermometer.

my display is always very warm. i first thought it had to do with the sun's radiation. but the unmistakable warmth coming from the ledge in front of the MFD in winter nixed that thought in a hurry.

I've met both Frank and his wife. I assure you, they are both pretty cool people.
