I'm wondering if it is a good idea to get the toyota extra care platinum for my new 2013 Prius (trim level 5). It is $1,900 for 6 years/125,000 miles.

There are just so many computerized systems in the car, I'm nervous to not get the extra warranty, but also it seems like a pretty big chunk of money (and I'm feeling a little broke after buying a brand new car!).

I thought maybe other owners could advise if they think it is worth the extra investment or not.

    Thanks for your help!

Welcome to the site. This topic has been beat to death and "opinions" are strong. Most will say the car is so reliable that it is a waist of money. Before this tread gets goofy, I say if you want this "insurance" do it, but negotiate a better price. $1900 is to high.

Note: "6 years" is only 3 since you get 3 years without extra cost. I got "8 years" which is really only 5 years for $1250.

I also got then 8 year for about 1250, as far as I concerned its just added insurance, but worth it.

I price matched off of a Littleton MA Toyota extra care quote, forgot the exact address, google it and bring the quote in.

Deal gave my 125k, 5 years at $990 for Platinum

I have a 2010 Prius with 104,000 miles. The only repairs that I have had are 2 headlight bulbs and one parking light. Total cost to me $12.00. These items are not covered by the extended warranty.

Consumer report sends surveys to all of the people that subscribe. Here is the reliability of the Toyota Prius. A red circle with a white dot is the highest score you can get. Basically it means zero repairs in those items.

I strongly recommend you do not waste your money on this. It is strictly a profit center for the dealer and Toyota. Worse case, wait until 3 years or 36,000 miles and if you have had zero repairs like most do not buy it.

A couple of other facts. Many dealers tell customers that if that battery dies it could cost you over $3,000 and an extended warranty will cover that. They are lying to you the battery is NOT covered by the extended warranty. Here is a list of many items not covered by the Platinum package.

    List of Excluded Components
    • Accessory Drive Belts
    • Batteries
    • Body Panels
    • Brake Linings, Pads and Shoes
    • Bumpers
    • Carpet
    • Chrome
    • Clutch Friction Disk and Pressure Plate
    • Dash Cover and Pad
    • Door Trim, Handles and Fabric
    • Filters
    • Fluids
    • Glass (including Windshield)
    • Headliner
    • Heating Hoses, Lines and Tubes
    • Hinges
    • Hybrid System Main Relays
    • Hybrid Vehicle Battery
    • Hybrid Vehicle Battery Module/Pack
    • Hoses
    • Interior and Exterior Trim Moldings, including but not limited to, Cup Holders, Ashtrays, Covers, and Vents
    • Lamps
    • Light Bulbs
    • Nuts, Bolts, Clips, Retainers and Fasteners
    • Paint
    • Rotors and Drums
    • Rust and Corrosion Damage
    • Seat Covers
    • Service Plug
    • Shiny Metals
    • Spark Plugs
    • Structural Framework and Wells
    • Tires
    • Vacuum Hoses, Lines and Tubes
    • Weather Stripping
    • Wheels and Rims
    • Windshield Wiper Blades (Rubber Component)"

The good news is the battery is covered by a factory 8 year 100,000 warranty that was free with your car.

I will make it simple and keep it general. If you are well off, don't buy it because you can afford any inevitability. If you know how to work on cars and are mechanically inclined, don't buy it. If you can't change your tire, air filter or spark plugs without buying tools from the auto parts store...and have to use a Haynes manual to just do that (you know what I mean), buy the extended warranty. And as said before, if you feel better with this extra insurance, buy it. That is my recommendation.

This really is a friendly and knowledgeable forum overall, but "Opinions" on this topic and a few others are strong. Bottom line...everyone is different and has different circumstances in life ChisP, take it all in (there's more coming) and do what you think is best for you and yours. ;) Best wishes.

You can buy the warranty at any time up to 3 years from car purchase date. Since the car is fully warrantied for 36 months, do not buy the warranty now, just put $1900/36 = $50 a month into a savings account (or even better, pay off any high interest debt you have). In 3 years decide. I'll bet you choose, like so many of us here do, to keep your money.

so what exactly IS covered .... my finance guy commented that he wouldn't even try to sell me extended warranty after we negotiated the terms ... I was able to tell monthly payments faster then he could do it with the computer I was prepared ... I knew more of the prius then the dealer and the finance guy together ... so useless options were only mentioned once :)

So really what is covered ??? engine ?? transaxel ?? what aren't those part of the drive-train warranty anyway ???

To me, all the consumable parts are not covered and those are usually the least expensive. I paid $990 for my warranty for 5 years, 125k miles and it feels good to know that mostly everything major is under warranty.

    Just negotiate a good deal.

My experience is very similar with our '04 Prius. If I exclude tyres, oil and filters, cost has been peanuts.

Don't you need to get all routine maintenance services done in order to keep your extended warranty?

If so, do your own and keep the receipts.
