Mid-September, and cars.com says there are some 17,000 left-over 2010 Prius. The local dealer's car I'm interested in was assembled 12/09 and their supplemental sticker shows $700 in non-sensical add-ons: the dealer-added Safety Package and Processing Fee add up to almost $700. With the useless OEM rubber mats and the rear bumper "applique," we're talking $1000... I might as well take $1000 and flush it down the toilet! Question, has anyone been successful in getting the dealer to "remove" any of this "stuff?" I guess one's only viable option is to use TrueCar.com, get the best deal you can in the level and color you want and forget about the silly-stuff.
Mine had almost $900 in fabric protectant, window etching, paint protectant, and nitrogen in the tires. I ignored the dealer supplemental sticker and started with the price on the manufacturer's window sticker. Ender up purchasing for over $3000 under the Dealer Invoice Price. Also, go to Truecar.com and build the car you are interested in with the options that appear on the main window sticker. Use this for your negotiation tool and don't even acknowledge the other sticker exists!
mainemanx, You don't have to put up with the shenanigans of you local dealer(s) anymore. With the Internet you can search for the exact car you want. When you find it you can discuss terms/negotiate with as many dealers as you can handle. You may have to travel a ways to get it though. When I got the run around from dealers locally, I did just that. At one point I was considering a car in Arizona. Fortunately, I found the exact car I wanted, at a price I could accept -- it did have the applique, first aid kit and mats. It was "only" 400 miles away in Rhode Island. Others have gone as far and farther. It's your money, it's your time. It's your choice.
Planning to buy in the next few weeks. Hearing that 17,000 are left- that sounds like a lot? So maybe I should wait a little?
Definately wait till the last day of the month! I did and feel it saved me an additional $330.00! Not much, but enough to cover my Autodim Mirror and Window Tint!
Thanks Paul I'm wondering if I should even wait longer than that- maybe til the last day of next month. but good idea- I'll at least wait til the end of September.
I certainly believe the 17,000 leftover Prius numbers. I went by my dealership the other day and saw two rows of Prius (Prii ?) on the lot. I went back and pulled up their inventory on line and it indicated 22. I have never seen more than two or three on their lot at any given time in the past.
To continue, with 17,000 nationwide leftovers, you'd think ToyotaUSA would be planning something really dramatic for October 5th, when the current incentives expire. Likewise, while I physically counted 62 at my local dealer, and they showed no less than 87 in online inventory, you'd also think they'd be well-advised to remove their buyer-infuriating, "silly-stuff" supplemental charges.
You would certainly think so. Have you tried another dealer to see what they will do? My local dealer is one of the hardest that I have ever had to deal with. I ended up going to a dealer 100 miles away to find someone that was willing to work with me.
Thanks everyone. I'll keep a sharp eye out for the next couple of weeks... cars.com, truecar.com, and of course, priuschat.com I'll try to set myself a limit of 100–150 miles to eek out a good deal on a simple, stripped Level II, Blizzard Pearl with dark grey cloth.
If you are a member go to www.aaa.com where you can build a car & get up to 3 quotes. If you don't like the prices or selection use different zip codes.
I got 2 great deals on a stripped down Package 2 (only mats and cargo net) from Greg Lavin at Wellesley (MA) Toyota, which is probably within your 100 mile range. I originally bought one in June, and then had to replace it last week after a 16 year old new driver hit the brand new one when she turned without looking right in front of my wife and hit her, causing over $16,000 damage. The insurance company wrote off the car (fortunately, my wife and son were fine). I live in CT, and had originally emailed 10 dealers in 4 states. Greg had the best price by far. He is also the consumate professional. If you decide to go there, tell him Barry (the guy who bought 2 blue ribbon Prii in 3 months) sent you
Inventory? Local dealership had 4 when I checked almost 2 mos ago, we bought 2 of the 3 two+ weeks ago - stopped by today to see if they had time to shut off the reverse beeper, he still only has the two white ones left...... Cant sell off an empty shelf!
Super thanks for the info! I'll give them a try. They're "half-way around 128" ... for both of us! Actually, IKEA Stoughton is my "lower limit." P.S. Your wife's accident sounds like one of those Allstate "mayhem" ads.... good that everyone was OK!
