    Although they have proven to be efficient and reliable (the first cars went to the scrapyard with their original battery packs intact), sales of hybrids have been modest compared with other "green" alternatives.

    There are just over 2,100 hybrids on the road today or 0.4 per cent of the total car population of about 550,500.

    Cars which run on compressed natural gas (CNG) number 2,600, despite having penetrated the market only in 2006.

    decent read. $88,000 for a Prius, eh.. they`ve come down in price.
