this has happened twice now about a week and a half apart... we are driving down the road and a chime noise, almost like a watch clock or something of that nature... could anyone tell me what that noise means??? it is not time for 5000 mile oil change, nothing shows up on the screen or dash...
    help
    thanks

A chime sounds when the last bar on the fuel gage starts to blink. That's probably not it since I doubt that you could drive a week and a half without running out of gas. Some are able to drive from 10 to 40 miles after the blinking starts, ymv.

I thought it happened whenever there was a warning message on the MSD -- however, the MSD message only lasts a couple of seconds, so ya gotta look quick. Fuel warning is one of those messages.

I said whenever there was a warning message on the MFD. One of which is low fuel...

Do you have the Navigation system? If so, the chime may be coming from it, if you are being routed somewhere the system gives an attention chime when you come to turns etc.

You can also associate what sounds like a loud doorbell chime with a specific location, though I doubt that's it. The Prius is full of chimes and dings that are very context specific. When it happens again, try to note the situation.

And sometimes you may just miss it . . .

Were you by chance driving like a nut . . . or crossing over or driving on a slippery surface?

If so, it could be the Vehicle Stability Control warning chime.

Was it three beeps? If the Smart Key System loses communication with the remote, such as when you get out of your car and close the door with the car still running, it will beep 3 times. The beep is outside and is not real loud inside.

I would assume that if your were driving around and the Prius thought it lost communication with the SKS remote, it would beep 3 times.

Do you keep your SKS remote next to a cell phone while you are driving? Like maybe in the same pocket?

the chime might be associated with VSC or ABS.

Could you be bumping the shifter with your knee? I got a chime today when I accidently bumped it while backing up...that could account for the rare and intermittent nature of the beeps.

Traction control does not beep and being on a bridge (unless it was wet and you were trying to accelerate from a stop or low speed) wouldn't cause traction control to kick in.

VSC will cause a triple beep, but you'd probably know the cause b/c you'd be at the edge of control or in a slide and you'd feel the system briefly take control of your car to correct for the slide. The dash will flash an icon, but it's unlikely you'd see it since driving would have all your attention in such a tenuous situation.

I started hearing a quiet little beep in my car. Went through most of the possibilities mentioned by the other posters. Finally noticed it with the car stopped. It turned out I had missed messages on my Verizon Razr V3 phone that was in the console. That phone/service does an occasional beep in that circumstance.

I believe the chime is the Entune system trying to connect to your phone - or some other phone in the car. Try turning off the Bluetooth on all phones and see if it doesn't go away. It worked for me.
