Any booster maker who doesn't use this as a new design goal deserves to go out of business.

I realize this was intentional. Pick it up and wash it off and many parts are likely to be reusable.

Perhaps not the high-speed, close-tolerance spinning bits. But it it will be fun to test fire them eh?

Mars car is scheduled to launch Feb. 6. With 27 spinning bits in concert which is probably a bigger deal than getting a car out of earth's gravity well.

    The Soviets/Russians had/have a similar approach:

I count 20 engines. But after 60 years, only one regular reusable, first stage booster. The shuttle returned three engines and the two solid boosters took a water landing. The liquid tank was always lost.

It will be interesting to see if Elon can go 3-3 with Falcon heavy's stage recovery.
    I'll be rooting for US.
Frankly....I'm looking much more forward to that event than I am to watching the game tomorrow.....and I get to eat GOOD GRUB with no caloric limit tomorrow!!! :D

Back when the Rooskies were bad before they became good and then bad again, they tinkered with a super heavy lift rocket (N1) with lotsa engines working not-quite in concert.
They went 0-4 and the program died.
Falcon heavy is one of those things that sounds like a real no-brainer....until you remember that troikas don't always work well....(in keeping with the Rooskie theme.)

As far as launching a Tesla?
Yeah......I would have been happier with an instrument package, but dot.gov would have just launched a static plug, and I think that Elon has earned the right to 'bury' this very interesting, and very long term time capsule.
The hardest part of rocketry is the first 6 inches......

20 main engines, but don't overlook the (at least) 12 smaller nozzles. I don't know if those are for steering, or part of the turbopump drive system.

I'll be waiting with bait in my breath.

I wonder what the Vegas line is on a 0g "Starman" and whether or not Elon has a hedge bet in for the alternative. :D
I wasn't a math major, AND YET I declined to pursue a friendly wager with the bigs.
We should have had an informal 'seconds' pool with the winner getting some bonus (or bogus....YMMV) PC trophies.

    Oh yeah....
    Kudos to Space-X.
It would appear that the Roadster will actually serve as an instrumented test sled after all, presuming of course that it gets past those first six inches...
Starman is going to be wearing special duds and they're going to be watching and listening.....and a crash dummy seems to be a good alternative to a "test mammal.'

I wonder if there are advocates out there for people with developmental challenges who object to the term "dummy?"

    GOD speed Space-X.

Even a spectacular fireworks display ought to get it well beyond 6 inches. Maybe even a hundred feet or so. :D

    Wow....
    It really is round!

    Spectacular launch and recovery!
There's still a question mark hovering over the fate of the center section, but even if it sleeps with the fishes, Space-X performed.....

    Good day for humans!

Edit....if the center section failed to achieve a proper landing, then the USCG should give Elon a symbolic $1 ticket for littering..... :D

Did we know a Gen1 Roadster could go this fast, even though its 0-60 time was slower this time?
