$6000 to $9000 more than an equivalent Outback though.:(

The battery, rear motor and its inverter must be taking up a bit of space. The Signia has about 4 inches more wheel base than the Outback, but 2 inches less rear legroom. The Subaru also has more over all interior volume, everywhere.

Yup and for comparison, about the same headroom and leg room as the Toyota Crown (crossover or sedan as its classified here) at about 40 lbs (18.1 kg) less than a comparable Toyota Crown XLE. The Toyota Crown (sedan) has about an inch more legroom in the rear seat but less head room in the rear. The Signia is about $2,000 more than a comparable Toyota Crown (sedan).

The Signia is 2 inches lower than the Outback so it should have less space including cargo space. So with the longer wheelbase that means it’ll have a nicer ride with the same exact length. Battery sits under the rear seat and in spite of it being about 500 lbs more riding on 21” wheels it’ll get about 9 mpg better combined. It’s really comparing comfort versus practicality as everybody who rides in it is comparing it to a Lexus (example:
). I’m also assuming they’re keeping room for a PHEV version like it has on their roadmap for the Signia or Estate as its known in Japan (New Information on Three New Crown Models | Toyota | Global Newsroom | Toyota Motor Corporation Official Global Website).

The height difference is in the Outback's 2 inches more ground clearance.;)

The fuel economy is great, and the difference is more with the turbo. It is just $1000 per mpg to replace my Outback Touring with a Signia Limited. I might have to opt for the package to get everything the Outback has.

While future planning for PHEV is a fair point, the size difference is still surprising. The two are about the same size on the outside, but there is about 20 cubic feet difference in interior volume between the two.

The Crown was always a 'Buick' Toyota, so comparisons to Lexus aren't surprising. Subaru doesn't have a separate brand brand for comfort. They have more trims for that. Not counting the engine upgrade ones, there are six Outback trims. The Base may match a Corolla inside, but the Touring can match a Lexus.

I expect the Outback will be the competitor most cross shopped with for this Crown.
