Stereo freakout [2002]

A friend of a friend is having some stereo trouble in an '02. He says:

.. I think the radio needs to be rebooted. Its behavior is erratic.
.. For example, you have to hold the Audio button for about 15
.. seconds to get the Audio display to come up and then it disappears
.. quickly if you don't let go right away. Also, it routinely
.. forgets radio frequencies. The CD player controls won't come up.
.. Etc. ... I strongly suspect that there is some sequence of
.. button pushes and who-knows-what-else (open and close the trunk
.. 3 times while pushing the Audio button?) to do a reset of the
.. audio system, but I've not found it.

Now, to me that sounds like an AVCLan communication problem, similar
to the '04 MFD sluggishness, and I told him so, but I figured I'd
throw it out here for comment and report back to him if any roll in.
I'm not as familiar with such issues in the Classic, so there's
probably better knowledge on that among the ranks here.
