I was driving to lunch today, and my driver's side window lost the "AUTO" function. No matter how I pushed or pulled on the button, and regardless of where the window was (up, down, middle), it wouldn't fully open/close like it is supposed to do. It would only move as long as I held down (or up) on the button.

What's weird is that after trying this for 10 minutes with no luck, I tried it 4 hours later, when leaving work, and it worked perfectly... I didn't change anything. Very strange.

Oh well, that's all I've got. Maybe while I was working, Bill Shatner happened by and pumped a few rounds into the gremlin in my car.

does that imply that the other windows other than the driver's one, have the auto function as well?

That's odd. I know it doesn't help and probably doesn't rest your mind any, but I've found a couple times when things like that happen but resolve themselves after a shutdown and restart.

Nope, only the driver's door window has the automatic function. (I've never seen it any other way in any other vehicle, either.)

Sounds like the auto window function became uninitialized. This is
a standard thing that has to be reset every time the battery is
disconnected or the window controller loses power for some reason.
What you do is move it down about halfway, and then pull the switch
all the way up [auto mode] and HOLD it there for a couple more
seconds after the window fully closes. That lets the little window
brain know where its closed position is so it can do the jam-
protection thing in auto mode, so then it enables auto mode.

VW's have auto up/down with pinch protection on more than the driver's window. My former car (Chrylser Pacifica) had auto-down on all windows and auto up on only driver's window.

I think the Hobbit nailed it. You probably inadvertantly fixed it by playing with the switch. Reinitilization procedure is simple. Start with the window fully up...push and hold down the switch and wait about 1 second after it bottoms before you release the switch. Now pull up and hold for 2 seconds after it is fully up. You should hear a soft click. Release and bingo, you have auto function again. the same sequence is used on all Lex/toy/scion sliding doors, windows, sunroofs....
