The 2nd gen Volt is looking better & better than the Prius

    After looking at all the information available on the 2nd generation Volt, it is looking to be a really great car.

    My opinion is based on all the information available on the 2nd gen Volt ( due in 2016) and all the information available on the 4th generation Prius (due sometime in the future ).

    Well, yeah. I think the new Volt is better looking outside and inside than any Prius, and if you want to EV like a mad dog for 50 miles, you can do that.

    Now, if someone wants to get all technical and focus on how the Prius seats 5 better, has more interior space, and uses energy more efficiently, they can make a case for the Prius.

    And yes, the new Volt looks somewhat like a Civic coupe and a few other cars too. That's not a bad thing because those cars sell very well.

    What's with the weird looks of the BMW i3, Leaf and iMiEV? You'll stick out in them, for sure.

    The Volt id fugly. The Prius is an engineering marvel and easy on the eyes, practical, versatile, and the market leader for 12 YEARS running!

    Are you saying "looking" as in cosmetically the Volt 2nd gen is more attractive than Prius 4th gen?

    Guessing you are referring to technicals like performance/efficiency/EV specs instead given there were credible Prius leaks on this at the time of your original post but not yet on the body design. In this case, we'll need someone to compare/graph the data once the final EV ranges and mpg data are released for both cars. Also probably more fair to compare the Volt to the Plug-in Prius.

    From what information we already know, the next Plug-in Prius will most likely result in less gasoline use for those with short to medium range commutes and who also take the vehicle on road trips.

    The Volt 2.0 will probably excel here for long commutes and less use with road trips. People may fall in love with the Volt's ~50 mile EV range, even if they end up using more gasoline compared to the Plug-in Prius.

    The current EV range of Plug-in Prius was too short for an all EV commute for many. If current rumors are correct with a 20-25 mile EV range, this will be much less true with the next Plug-in Prius. In this case, you would have to say the 2nd generation Volt is not looking better and better. Maybe better and better compared to the regular Prius.

    Either way, we will know in just a few months.

    The first Volt has a more enjoyable interaction between the driver and car. There is no reason to expect the 2nd gen to not also be so.

    The Prius does not have this. If the reports are to be believed, the 4th gen was delayed in order to work upon this. Hopefully this will be improved, because it does not matter how green a car is if no one wants to drive it.

    And many more want to drive an ICE Camry, and even more a F150.

    Of the straight hybrids, the Prius is the only one to reach 6 figure sales in a year. The sales of the others have Volt, Leaf, and Model S sales close behind, and even surpassing them. The Prius plug in only reliably beats California only plug ins on sales. That will change if it goes nationwide, but its plug in competitors have also improved.

    How so? My first post in this chain was to point out that reduced emissions is a priority for a smaller number of buyers. The comparison was between the Volt and Prius plugin, not the liftback.

    The Prius has the highest sales of any hybrid. Yet it is dwarfed in sales by several ICE vehicles. Again, something is more important to buyers than reduced emissions. It isn't just vehicle size. Two or more Corollas are sold for every Prius.

    Sales of the Prius PHV should grow with a national availability and increased EV range. So will sales of the Volt with the improved EV range, performance, and interior, along with lower price. The Volt also has the advantage the a buyer in every state may have saw one on the road.

    i said ' according to sales statistics, a lot of people want to drive it'.

    you said 'and many more want to drive an ice camry, and even more an f150'.

    i'm not sure where you were taking the conversation, but my point is you can talk all you want about want about how the volt drives, and i'm sure it drives nicely. and you can talk about how poorly the prius drives, (although i disagree) it's obvious that green cars sell, no matter how they drive. camry is no great driver, and neither is f150, they sell for other reasons.

    so in post #11, you were referring to pip, not prius? you think they will hopefully improve the pip handling, but not the lift back?
