Is it a common thing to have an arrow above the gas gauge point to the left to remind you that the car fills up from the driver's side? I have not seen this before and thought it was pretty funny.

I think it's pretty common but only in the last few years. I've seen in on numerous rental cars.

It's not always an arrow, I think. If you happen to be in a car that does not have an arrow, check to see which side of the gauge the gas pump symbol is on.

I think it's an LED display thing.
Cars with the LED display, that I've been in, have had them.
Not that I've ever really noticed them before...

Now, one that randomly changes sides whenever you go to fill up
would be quite the engineering feat.

I find it amazing we even need an arrow on any car. You have a 50% chance of pulling up on the correct side and shouldn't be that hard to remember to begin with. Ah but I miss the old days of the fill up spouts at the rear of vehicles.

It's a blessing with rental cars when you're racing to get to the airport on time for your flight but need to fill the car up before returning it!

My memory stinks to begin with. Add the fact that I get gas only twenty-some times per year and I need something to remind me. :D

My work cars fill on the right while my Prius fills on the left and my Crown fills at the back and my bike fills at the front.

And the only open pumps at the station are for the other side of your car. <_<

Consider the person who travels a lot for work and rents cars. He or she wants to fill up the rental car quickly before turning in the car and catching a return flight. Those arrows are very useful in that situation.

All cars have them. It is a great benefit when renting cars.
