I know some of you never use the metal key and I'll bet some
people aren't even aware it's inside the fob, but I use mine
quite a bit and it was becoming increasingly difficult. On a
bit of an impulse, this page all about the door lock got
put together today. Easier job than I expected!

Wow, what an incredibly detailed how-to! Thanks for taking the time to share this with us; I'm sure there will come a time when many others use your guide as a reference.

    Thanks for the writeup!

I'd like to add a lock to the right side door. Do you think a mechanism from a left door would work on the right? Be nice to have a second mechanical lock as a backup to the left one.

Nice writeup. All that grease sure explains why the keylock is so stiff.

That is a really nice design for serviceability. I'm thinking about what a PITA it was to replace the door lock solenoids in my Ford in comparison to this. On the Ford, they rivet the solenoid to the door, so you have to drill out the rivet to remove it, as if they believe that the part will never fail. I have had to replace two of them.

    Impressive, Hobbit.

    I have a couple thoughts:
    • Using the metal key locks the door even when the car's running. I don't remember trying that myself or anyone mentioning that works. Thanks for that tip.
    • Would you recommend that everyone use the metal key from time to time in order to keep the parts moving and from freezing? I can't remember every using the metal key.

Thanks for the writeup. This has come up before under the dead keyfob battery thread. I had *never* used the metal key until that post, and it almost wouldn't turn

I tried to do a search but there is something odd about the forum today.

Anyhoo, I used a spray product meant just for lock cylinders. A day and night difference.

I also never use the metal key on my FJ, so thought I would try it. Very stiff, so a spritz of that lock spray cured it. I would think in areas where road salt is used in winter, the problem would be much worse

Thanks Hobbit! Your post inspired me to try the mechanical key on the lock in my 2004 this afternoon, and it worked fine. However I noticed that after I locked the vehicle using the key, neither the Smart Key function nor the fob buttons would work to unlock the car. Hence, using the key disables those functions - this is probably documented deep in the owner's manual but I did not realize that feature existed until now.
