yeah it was on G4's Attack of the Show a week or two ago, its pretty cool. On Top Gear they drove a BMW around a track once and then after that it was able to drive autonomously very quickly around the track with no driver input whatsoever.

we actually have the technology to have cars drive themselves on the expressway as I had a gen III with the advance technology package that could keep its lane and keep its distance behind the vehicle behind. Let me tell you that one hour drives in that thing felt like I just went around the corner to the grocery store, very relaxing.

as far as the city is concerned we're probably 50-100 years away from cars driving themselves in the city, first off, everybody would have to have the technology on every vehicle for everything to work safely and seamlessly together. Its one thing to force everybody to have a vehicle with ABS and stability control system which are safety features, its quite another to force them to buy something even more expensive that's a luxury features for lazy people. And telling them they would have to buy a new car or upgrade their old one is unconstitutional, as our president has found out the hard way about trying to force people to buy health insurance despite the fact that many people consider health insurance a necessity.

and upgrading the vehicles themselves wouldn't be enough, you would have to upgrade infrastructure such as lights and other sensors as well.

jumbo jets can land themselves, the technology has been here for quite awhile however it is not allowed in America. The ILS (instrument landing system) requires pilots landing in America to take over at a certain AGL (feet above ground level). But that same pilot is allowed to completely allow that same jumbo jet to self-land automatically in Heathrow. Different countries, different rules.

Adding $5000 of "unneeded" technology to cars, some of which start at under $10,000) is not reasonable. Adding $50,000 of technology to an aircraft which costs $50,000,000 is just a drop in the bucket.
