    definitely not all that simple...
What type of pie? what type of cake? what's the occasion?

For a birthday, i'll take cake over pie any day.

On holidays, i'll usually take pie over cake (especially pumpkin pie at thanksgiving.... yummy!).

The rest of the year, it really comes down to whats available... Pumpkin, blueberry, apple pie? Chocolate, strawberry, vanilla cake? There's really a whole range that would need classifying... lets see how i can do with what i thought of off the top of my head:

pumpkin pie = chocolate cake > blueberry pie > vanilla cake > apple pie > strawberry cake > Key Lime pie

Of course, there are many other flavors and varieties than listed here... but you can see it's clearly a toss up :)

    Pie > Cake

...usually. Rhubarb pie... mmm. Apple, lemon meringue, peach. But pie is only good if you make it yourself and eat it shortly after coming out of the oven.

There are some spectacular cakes though, so some days I'd vote differently.

This is so true. There's a reason nobody ever heard of a birthday pie or a wedding pie. However, if you're at a diner, you do NOT order cake.

Since I go to diners more often than I go to weddings, pie gets the vote.

A friend of mine describes Strawberry-rhubarb pie as "a waste of good rhubarb." She much prefers the straight-up rhubarb pie. Me, I'm a cake guy.

A better question, perhaps, is, "Cake or Death?"

I'm glad that you are finally tackling the important issues!
I like both way too much- to my detriment! :(
What about cheeescake? Yes, it has "cake" in the name- but it has a crust- does that mean it's really a pie?

I thought the real question was "Cake or Death"?

    Nevermind.

Rhubarb pie is wonderful, no question. Strawberry pie is good, too. However, strawberry rhubarb is the best pie in the universe. Picture rhubarb pie as being Paul Simon and strawberry pie as being Art Garfunkle.

I must agree with Eagle- not a black and white answer.

Depends on the type of cake or pie. And then you have cheesecake. Is it really cake? Or should it be called cheesepie? Rice cake? Cow pie? What the hell is mincemeat anyway?

Figures the neocon would word it like that.

Neocon: Which do you prefer? Cake or pie?
    American: Well, it depends.
Neocon: Simple question. Choose one. Cake or pie?
American: It's not that simple. You see, if...
    Neocon: CAKE OR PIE?
American: OK! OK! Um, pie, I guess.
Neocon: Why do you hate cake so much?
    American: I never said...
Neocon: You said you prefer pie to cake.
    American: But I...
Neocon: Cake-hater. Why don't you just move to Pielandistan if you love pie so much?
American: OK! OK! I choose cake!
Neocon: Waffler! Look at the liberal flip-flopping!
American: Excuse me, there's a wall there that I need to pound my head against.

Pie, all about the pie. I have yet to find a cake that's better than banana or coconut cream.

Sorry- there is NO cake that is "better than sex". I don't think there's any pie that's better than sex either, but the guy from "American Pie" might disagree.

I couldn't vote. I like both varieties of both.

    Hey... I rhymed! :D

Peanut Butter pie is sinfully delicious. Lemon Ice Box pie (you southerners might know about this one) is my absolute favorite. Then there's Ollaberry pie, which is only around for a short time once a year.

Vanilla cake with chocolate frosting is the bomb. German chocolate is pretty darn good too.

How in the world do you choose?

Actually, i change my mind... it's possible for cake to beat any pie out, regardless of flavor... it just depends on who's jumping out of it
