    Still off by a factor of 1,000 - it's 1,600,000,000 (everyone seems to agree we hit the one billion mark by 1850).

    I remember it well. It was the year when a Liberal government was elected in the UK for the first time. They had a majority of 84 and immediately embarked on sweeping social reforms one of which was old age pensions for the first time.

    The population of New York was 4 million and London was 4.5 million. The US made 23,000 motor vehicles.
