Do you celebrate April fools day a month early in the States? Surely this is a joke right?

Unfortunately, I don' think this one is a joke. I searched the forum, and couldn't find any earlier posts about this and had never heard of this before. I not really surprised, though. I guess we should have seen this coming now that we have vehicles that operate without using any gas. The government is so broke, they will try anything.

Has anyone in WA heard about this before?

Screw that.... time to move out of that backward state!

Sen. Mary Margaret Haugen proposed an annual $100 tax for electric car owners when they register their vehicles.

    Mary your not helping, SDSTFU!!!

May be a sign of bad things to come if this passes.

The title said Prius and there is a Prius pic, but after looking at it again, it looks like it may be electric cars only. My bad.

    It does say:

"If approved, the tax is estimated to generate $500,000 through 2012. As electric vehicles become more popular, it could raise as much as $1.5 million in 2017 alone, Haugen estimates."

That is alot of electric vehicles.

Though even if they started to tax a Prius, I wonder if they would tax the Priuses that were on the road before this became enacted?

i suppose the leaf would qualify, but what about the volt? they get the tax credit, but it's not really an electric vehicle.

How about taxing all vehicles that weigh over 3 tons (metric or traditional)? Surely the heavier vehicle does more damage to the road surface?

excellent idea. around here, vehicles over a certain weight are not even allowed on the roads in winter.

The mileage tax that Oregon was looking into makes more sense to me.

Just because a lawmaker proposes a bill, does not mean that the bill will ever be written, presented, voted on, or approved.

Lots of things have been proposed to prop up our state's budget. This is just one of them...

That is a good idea, because there currently are a lot more vehicles over here that are over 3 tons than electric cars. I do remember a few years back during the Bush era that there was some kind of special deal about having a vehicle over 8500 pounds (4.5 tons). I think it was some sort of tax break, or that they did not have to meet standards of some sort. Maybe that is why there are cars on the road today that get 6 miles to the gallon. I wonder if that deal still exists?

Archaic thinking. You don't penalize for conservation & efficiency, you reward and encourage the move to more efficient, less polluting forms of transportation. At the same time you emphasize walking & bicycles, light & high speed rail. You de-emphasize individual vehicle use.

This same type of archaic thinking has been tried with water & energy conservation. It fails every time.
