From the posts that I have read, this is a good service to do periodically because it supposedly gets gummed up more frequently on the Gen II.

Does anyone have a DIY or some tips/advice they can provide for this service?

    Thanks.

    Found it, thanks:

    TB cleaning

As I thought, removing the entire air filter housing is the way to go. That would allow me to clean the throttle plate without disturbing the MAF sensor, if I am seeing this correctly.

My memory of the 2g is starting to become rusty since I have not worked on one in a few months. :p

Just did this service on a 08 with 52k last night. There was a light-to-moderate coating of black carbon over the entire throttle body. Used a costco mf rag, some screwdrivers and fingers, and cleaned it all up. Also did the engine air filter and drive belt at the same time.

The physical method works, you can also give it a hit with MAF spray next time. :cheer2:

is this caused by bad gas? my daughters 04 at 90,000 miles shows no signs of performance loss and we have never cleaned it.

    Re: Throttle Body Cleaningthink

I think a light carbon or dust coating is normal and operation would be normal. It is good preventitive maintenance tho. Possibly if you drive in a highly industrialized and polluted environement this could be a real problem. Maybe we will hear from China, Mexico in this regard. :cheer2:

Some throttle bodies get a lot dirtier than others, to be sure. Seems like many causes might be at play here; I for one have no idea what the common ones are.

Just check once in a while. It takes all of a few seconds.
