This is today's marine weather forecast for northern Lake Michigan. Anyone want to go sailing? Waves of this size are much more dangerous on the Great Lakes than the ocean. The short fetch on the lakes means the waves are very steep and close together, unlike ocean swells. The lakes are more like the English Channel. The water temperature is down to 40°F.

    How many feet??? Bloody hell.
I have been on Lake Alexadrina in a bit of a blow and it's dreadful but it wasn't 10 to 14 feet!!
Might have to go for a sail in my 14 foot Sabre.

The freezing spray is a nice touch too. You make ice on all of the topsides and rigging, and everything gets heavier. It's a good way to turn over.

A little cool weather never hurt a sailor. That forecast sounds like a summer day on SF Bay...25-35 knots. Including the wind-chill makes the temp seem normal. Luckily we don't get iced up rigging which could certainly put one in peril.

We are at 10°F now and dropping. All of the 40°F water around us keeps us a little warmer than your location. The water keeps us warmer in the winter and cooler in the summer. I realize that you are also close to the water, but we are located 25 miles out into the lake.

It's even cold in Vancouver. There's some funny white stuff on the flowers. :D

    Hi qbee42,

I am about 30 miles inland, so the only effect the lake really has is once in a great while we will get lake effect snow this far inland. Like the day I drove my Prius home.

Thank goodness the sun is out here now, or it would be really cold. The wind chill was down around -25 F at 8 am . It actually got colder beween 6 and 8 am .

Pish-posh, 'tis but a slight breeze!

Still, I don't plan to be one of the "Polar Bears" taking their annual New Years Day wade through the ice into Lake Michigan!

I'll take flipping my small boat in high surf any day to those conditions. At least I stayed warm until I was rescued.

I know why it's so cold. A guy I know who works in the illumination
business told me, so it must be true.

For the last two decades, we've been sending one of our most treasured
national assets, our sunlight, overseas at grossly reduced prices. This is
accomplished with a very simple system of smoke and mirrors.

We've done this out of sheer perversity, of course. We all are to blame.

To make every thing OK, Congress has approved a bailout plan for our
domestic light bulb industry to the tune of $50B... but only so long as
they make historically correct reproductions of Edison's original human
hair element bulb. These bulbs will cost 10 cents to produce and will sell
for $10... except during the semi-diurnal "Employee Pricing" and fortnightly
Red Tag events when they'll go for $9.99.

They have a service life that is rumored to exceed the warranty
    period of...

    Oops, it just expired.

Yes, it's probably the fault of those darned CFL lamps.

Reading the thread title made me smile, and I had to check it out.

i am a great fan of PBS's British Comedy, "As Time Goes By," with Dame Judy Dench. On the show, Mrs. Beal is constantly interrupting to announce the boating forecast; that would be for the English Channel.

Just a thank you to the engineers and line workers at Toyota for taking extremely sophisticated machinery and making it work in all temperature extremes. The attached photo of the MFD on my 2008 was taken this morning prior to the drive in to work.
