How old is that list? The Smart ForFour stopped production in 2006 and the Smart ForTwo isn't even on the list. According to VCAcarfueldata.org.uk - Home Page the top 5 fuel efficient cars are:

    1. Smart Fortwo CDI no DPF 33kW -------------------- 85.6
    2. Ford Fiesta 1.6L TDCi w/ DPF (90PS) --------------- 76.3
    3. VW Polo 1.4 TDI Bluemotion w/ DPF (80PS) ------- 74.3
    4. Mini Cooper D w/ DPF ------------------------------- 72.4
    5. Citroen C1 1.4L HDi --------------------------------- 68.9
    "Imperial MPG combined"

I would love to be able to buy a Mini Cooper D in the US. My wife loves them and we drove a Mini before purchasing the Prius. In the end we just could get our heads around going from 45 mpg with a VW Jetta Wagon to "Only" 30 mpg for the much smaller MINI. It was a really fun car to drive though.

For god's sake, they really have to get rid of the stigma - "On the downside, it is quite slow..."

It's the 2nd fastest car to 60 on that list!! It's 5th on top speed and it's the largest of them all by two classes (except the Civic)

The Civic Hybrid looks really weird here, because it's substantially bigger than a Civic. The Civic hatchback is 220mm shorter than the HCH and the styling is completely different. It's still 265mm longer than a Jazz (Fit) though.

The numbers on Wikipedia suggest that a Prius is actually marginally shorter than a HCH! (About 20mm).

I read the title and thought, "who'd want a 12MPG car??"

The Mini Cooper was our second choice. If the diesel was available here I'm pretty sure we would have gotten it instead.

The Prius tops this "10 most fuel efficient list" for the North American market:

    We should pull this apart.
Yes it is a real hybrid, the only real hybrid in the top 12
It only uses petrol as a fuel source.
    Plenty of space, no argument
    Quiet engine, as above
Slow? Quicker to 60mph than all but one car above it and 3rd highest top speed missing second by only 4mph
Looks? If it didn't look good why has it outsold the plain looking Honda Civic Hybrid? and is it really uglier than this?

I was surprised at the Mini, sounds like a great car!
Minis are bigger than they look.

Should the Prius have been at number 4 or 5?
It has the same combined mileage as the two above it, is faster than number 4, faster and accelerates better than number 5 and would be better than either around town economy.

I thought you did get a Civic Saloon?? Only the Hatchback?? lucky bums. We've been dying to get a Civic Hatchback (the last one that left in 2000 was only offered in basic CX form.. i.e. no wheel covers, no power steering etc etc because back then, hatchbacks were basic cars)

I noticed that, too. There are 2 groups on the table that tie overall mileage. They put these in order of either 0-62 time (slowest first) or highway mileage alone.

Yeah, what's going on with that? They don't make the comments about all the others being "slow" when they are much slower.

They also fail to point out those that are tiny.

Yeah, I was expecting Hummers and VW Touarags. I know all these cars are diesel, but I just don't like diesel.

Fact is, the prius feels slow, thanks to the MG2 connected directly to the wheel at a 1:1 ratio.

But it's just a feeling - cause I'm always ahead of everybody. :)
