Toyota building $192M green-car battery plant

Toyota's joint venture with Matsushita Electric, which makes Panasonic .. is building the plant in .. Japan. The plant will produce nickel-metal hydride batteries, now in the Prius. (said on Friday morning by Toyota's spokesman Paul Nolasco)

The Nikkei, Japan's top business daily, reported Friday that Toyota was building another plant in Japan to make lithium-ion batteries, set to be running by 2010, for future ecological cars. Nolasco (Toyota spokesman) said no decision has been made on such a plant.

Toyota has said the lithium-ion batteries may be used in plug-in hybrids, which can be recharged from a home electrical outlet.

Connecting the dots: Lithium batteries by 2010, and PHEV by 2010. Why the NiMH plant? Millions of priuses will likely be sold before 2010 arrives, and then in 2010, perhaps NiMH will be offered on the "standard" Prius, with Lithium an extra option.
