"Detroit-based weekly Automotive News, whose data center publishes a widely quoted ranking of the world’s automakers around this time every year, said Japan’s top carmaker outsold GM by about 128,000 units last year based on a technicality that excludes sales of vehicles at minority-held subsidiaries."

I do not understand why Detroit execs are missing the opportunity of investing in hybrid technology heavily. I also do not understand why they don't pressurize the government for national healthcare since that would remove that monkey of their shoulders, given that Toyota workers cost very little in terms of healthcare.

In Japan who pays for the health care? If it is the government then isn't Toyota paying for it with their taxes?

For years, Toyota & the other Japanese auto manufacturers have embraced Lean Manufacturing concepts to reduce waste (cost) from their operations, while US manufacturers are once again lagging behind. Go tour a Toyota factory, then go tour a US manufacturer's factory and the differences are like night & day how they get things done, and the general mentality of the employees. Toyota employees come to work thinking of ways they can eliminate waste & improve things. If they don't have the right attitude & make contributions, they don't work there very long. Many "Detroit" employees don't and the employers can't do anything about it.
