Based on SUV owners typically travelling 9,000 miles per year, and average 2016 fuel prices: petrol 109.2p/litre, diesel 109.7p/litre. A. RAV4 Diesel Active, 2WD, B, RAV4 Hybrid Business Edition Plus, 2WD.

Our tests show that the Toyota RAV4 Hybrid uses so much fuel compared with the diesel RAV4 we tested, it wipes out all potential savings from the hybrid's lower car tax (VED) with its bigger fuel bills.
    . . .
Although it officially comnplies with the latest Euro 6 emissions levels, we recorded very high levels of carbon monoxide (CO) in our tests, which are more representative of emissions during everyday driving. . . .

ps. "Which?" is a UK version of Consumer Reports however it is a little pricey. I dropped my subscription because I'm supporting Robert Llewellyn via Patreon. Other articles include "Apple MacBook Pro with Touch Bar" (BEST BUY). Also a head-to-head of Apple vs Windows: 90% Apple over 67% Windows.

    A poor comparison. Rav4 2.0 diesel a manual 143hp... hybrid 2.5 is no competitor!!
A relative of mine had to change a defective/worn clutch (40k miles) in his RAV, 1000eur..just in case someone finds manuals are some sort of "plus"...

It's hard to ignore the almost £6k price difference as well.

Well this basically shows what we've known about the two sources of fuel and two types of powertrain.

    Highway? Take the diesel

    Intracity? Take the hybrid

Highway, but with long stretches to keep temperature/flow enough to regen the DPF.

    Every service else, hybrid petrol.

Were any other emission results reported, e.g., NOx from diesel?

I'd be curious to know $tax/liter for both fuels to see how tax impacts the comparison.

There were thousands of complaints about the clutch being worn on Chevy cobalts as early as 20,000 miles, based on how mine is wearing it will be worn somewhere after 200,000 miles.

Many people don't know how to drive the grabbier new clutches and ride the hell out of them, launch as close to idle as you can and unless the plate grenades even a crappy clutch will make it over a 100k

By the way, also, for the USA, Bob Lutz (I know) quotes generic diesel version costing in the range +$8000 in USA over gaso with our EPA regs, so let's say +$3000 over a hybrid version. So I do not think this comparison works for USA. In EU with more gaso tax, and cheaper diesel options, OK.
