    Toyota launches summer swim activities

"This summer, Toyota is visiting more than 20 U.S cities, providing the opportunity for swimmers and their families to participate in a variety of activities. Toyota will be on hand at local swim meets, hosting interactive and fun activities including a swim cap coloring contest, Zurf races and a swim clinic featuring four-time Olympian Dara Torres. "

"Toyota recognizes the amount of time, energy and support parents and families give to organize and manage swim meets. To show its commitment to these events and to the families who stage them, Toyota will give away a new car at the end of the summer. Adults attending the meet can enter for a chance to win a 2005 Toyota Prius. The Prius combines an efficient gas engine with an emissions-free electric motor to produce an ideal combination of fuel efficiency, environmental sensitivity and performance. Prius has a combined city/highway mpg rating estimate of 55, making it one of the most popular cars around!"

Well, it's a marketing gimmick -- but as it provides support for swim teams, that's hunky-dory with me.

I spent a lot of hot, muggy Maryland summers swimming freestyle laps (unfortunately, not very quickly) in my teens. So, more power to 'em.

A dumb question: doesn't it say that the current Prius models are powered by HSD as well?

It is interesting to note that HSD is really being displayed prominently by Toyota.

Part of this may be that, with other car manufacturers leasing Toyota hybrid technology (Subaru, Nissan(?)), they want HSD to be a recognized "quality hybrid" brandname.
