In case you didn't catch the news this weekend, Toyota executive Don Esmond announced that the next member of the Prius family will be revealed at the 2011 North American International Auto Show in Detroit this coming January. No word on whether it will be the much photographed and recently leaked and teased Prius V, or if it will be it's quieter little brother, the Prius C. Back in 2009 we had the great reveal of the 3rd Generation Prius, 2011 will bring the reveal of the first new member of the Prius family... I wonder what 2013 will bring Prius fans.

I think we'll see two new Prius models based on these recently introduced Toyota models:

Although the Alpha MPV is tempting, being older and with only me and the wife, the compact model would make much more sense, especially if it closely resembles the Verso. Would be nicer if the price point for a well-appointed compact was around 20-22K.
We haven't gone to the Detroit show for a few years, but this year we will be there. I hope Toyota's star is back on the rise!!!

Very cool news, what has been talked about for a while now is finally becoming reality... The beginning of a Prius Family.

That looks like my next car!

Give me something smallish, light, ideally with tight suspension and I'm all over it. I have not heard about Yaris handling, but I have heard about the Mini's "go-cart handling" and Fit's fun handling. I certainly hope Toyota's Prius Mini is as fun to drive as it is hypermilable.

If Toyota deceides to bring the newest Prii models to the Jacob Javitz Auto show this year I'm going to be sure to go check them out. I so want to know if the v will be a 6 seater or a 7 seater.

Is this one of those "When a Boy Car and a Girl Car love each other very much..." events?

I'm game for the reveal! Wonder if my calendar will support an onsite preview...

With any luck at all, GOOD luck, Toyota will now have adapted the Prius I4 to DFI. 15:1 Base/native compression ratio, up from 13:1, and a substantial HP/torque and FE improvement. Or will they downsized the I4 to maintain the current level of HP/torque and see DRAMATIC FE gains..??

Even better if they adopt the RX450h's multi-mode engine cycle technique. Otto mode, 15:1 ACTUAL CR for low to moderate throttle. Atkinson cycle, 12:1 "effective" CR, for WOT or nearby.

    60MPG....

More cars may be sold in Ca than Michigan, but the debut of a new, potentially high volume car from a "foreign" automaker is very "irritating" to U.S. based auto makers if the debut is in Detroit.

    Keith

P.S. Wouldn't it be nice if the new cars were also made here in the U.S. in the new plant that Toyota was going to use to make the current gen Prius?

For cost and simplicity of production purposes, I'm pretty sure they are going to use the current 1.8L that is in the current Prius. However, it would be awesome if they introduced an even more efficient engine. Now that you have me thinking about it ... it would be sweet to see such an engine introduced when the Plug-In Prius launches. It could be a special engine just for the Plug-In.
(right now, manufacturers make special engines just for high performance models, such as an "R" or "S" or "M." So technically, Toyota could make a special engine just for the Plug-In Prius)

An in-line V6? how do you propose they would arrange the cylinders on that?
