    DETROIT—Toyota Motor Corp. has named former U.S. Transportation Secretary Rodney Slater to lead a new quality panel of independent experts, according to prepared testimony for Tuesday's Senate committee hearing.

    Mr. Slater, who served under President Bill Clinton, will lead this new panel that will make sure Toyota's new quality controls "conform to best industry practices," Toyota's North American President Yoshimi Inaba said in his prepared testimony to the Senate's Commerce, Science and Transportation Committee.
