So after doing some research on here and other sites, I found a someone who added this setup to their WRX.
I thought it was a great idea, so I added it to my WRX first.
I liked it so much, I just did it to the Prius as well:

This is replacing the stock side light with a bright LED along with adding the LED strip across the top.
Total cost was $5 and 10 mins of time to solder it up and install it into the car.

ALL hatches/wagons should come like this from the factory.

    Thanks Hal,
I should take a pic to show how 'stealth' like the LED's actually are.
You really only see them when they are lit up.
Others I've seen have ugly (to me) lights that are visable all the time. And they have had to drill a pannel to fit the lights or at least the strap/holder for the lights.
I can take this back out and you'll never know it was ever there.

Wow...I quite like that a lot. Did you just tap into the rear dome light?

    Thanks guys.
I bought a wire/light combo off eBay that allows you to put the type of socket (in my case a fuse lamp style) to a LED light.
Then I soldered it to the LED strip.
Another option I thought about is adding a switch in so I could run the LED strip separately from the stock light.

with your seats folded I would think you also get plenty of light from the interior dome light, so although I like your idea, If manufacturers were going to put this stock in cars I think it should be sedans and coupes with traditional trunks that don't get any lighting from the cabin.

what's always bothered me about the prius and every other wagon and hatch is the light duty rear suspension we get, where's the HD springs so I can go to Home Depot w/o my bumper squatting down on the ride home.

you need a little ambient(some call it theatre) lighting up front, as in the genIII Prius which has a single LED bulb in the roof, I think it prevents headaches on long trips. I have to turn my nav MFD off on highway trips as that is just too much light, but than I get too little light, both of which cause uncomfortable long distance driving.

I have yet to take any pics of the Prius, but here is how it looks when it's off in my WRX:

Here is my WRX stock with the seats down:

Here it is with both the seats up and down after I've installed the lights:

A sedan has a light directly above the trunk area, but you can also install this setup in a sedan to provide more trunk light.

I have yet to take quality pics of the Prius with this setup, but if anything it should provide more light in the trunk then in my Impreza, since the Prius has more of it's roof over the trunk area then my Impreza.

    Sorry, I missed this.

I picked up one of these:
    </title><meta name="description" content="Light Lamp Panel 36 SMD LED+T10+Dome Bulb+BA9S Adapter in eBay Motors , Parts Accessories , Car Truck Parts , Lighting Lamps , Light Bulbs , LED Lights |eBay"><meta name="keywords" content="Light Lamp Panel 3
The Prius uses the bottom one in the picture, which is a fuse lamp style light adaptor.

I tapped into it's wire with this:
    http://www.ebay.ca/itm/170750385064?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1439.l2649

Run the light behind the cars panel. I just had to unscrew the one bolt and the piece will pop out enough to run the wire in behind.
Then I ran the wire up to the headliner and tucked the rest of the wire behind the headliner.

    Hope this helps.

Nicely done. It is pretty stealthy in the WRX.

I agree, there needs to be a second hatch light at the minimum. The one-sided light is pretty poor unless it's pitch black (e.g. on a country road), then it works well and again, assuming you don't have anything tall blocking the light.

Saw that when I was looking around at the idea's.
Personaly I don't like it, it looks to bulky to me.
Also, you have to remove panels, drill into panels and you couldn't return it back to stock without replacing those panels.

I just popped my side panel out enough to run the wire in behind and then just tucked it under the weather stripping and headliner.
Plus, this cost me a total of $5.00.

Did you add the strip LED's in parallel and use the 36 LED Strip in the existing trunk light position?
