Hey everyone, we are going to get ourselves out of a TDI and into a Prius V. We have two deals on the table and are struggling to decide.

    1: 2016 Prius V3 - 15,000 miles for $20,250 plus tax/tag

    2: 2015 Prius V5 w/ ATP - 27,000 miles for $20,100 plus tax/tag

Our dilemma obviously is more features or newer with lower mileage. Since we don't have a lot of experience yet, what seems like the better deal long term?

We did, but from what we can gather, it looks like under 30k miles is usually pretty safe and still like-new.

New would be what, about 7k more than the 2016 for a similar V3?

Does that price seem like a bargain or standard deal you can find easily find for a used V?

every area is different. you would have to do the legwork. gas is cheap, some area's are deeply discounting.

Deep down I think it is a good deal for the ATP package, I just have the dreaded second guess everything gene...

If anyone else has recently purchased a used Prius V, let me know!! Thanks bisco

A Gen 4 Prius is going to serve you better than a Gen 3 prius.

I would even suggest getting a new Gen 4 Prius V because they are not selling well. Probably a good deal to be had on new Prius considering they are clearly out the 2017 models right now.

I think the guy is talking a Prius v station wagon Model 3 versus 5. How important are the Model 5 with ATP's features to you? I'd not consider the difference in miles significant. Is the history of service available for both?

Buying any car is a crap shoot. With either they should still be under manufacturers warranty for a bit.

I was referring to the Prius V (wagon) in my previous post. The regular Prius sedan is selling much better than the wagon and C models. Suggesting the OP look at new considering they have 0% financing available. The OP was considering a Gen 3 (V) wagon vs a Gen 4 2016 Prius 3 model. The Gen 4 models get significantly better mileage and better safety features.

We like the v Five features, would have gone for ATP had we known more about it at the time.

    A 2016 Prius V3 is that not a Gen 4 Prius?

Used vs new for $7k more is a somewhat hard call. One way I've thought about it is if you assume a 200,000 mile life on a Prius and divide the new price by the life. So it sounds like new is about $27k divided by 200,000 miles gives you a cost of 13.5 cents per mile. Multiply the 15,000 miles on the 2015 three by the .135 and you've used up about $2000 of the car but you are paying $7000 less so there is $5000 difference to make up for shorter warranty, free maintenance, uncertainty, needing tires sooner, etc. That's probably worth it. Back when we bought our v the best used options I could find were maybe $1000-2000 off by this system. That wasn't worth it to me, this would tempt me.

But a Gen 4 hatchback will not carry the amount of cargo that a Prius v will. If your use for a car is to move stuff, the v is the way to go, many SUVs have less room.

Gen 4 EPA cargo volume 24.6 to 27.4 Depends on if it has a spare
    Prius v cargo volume 34.3

so 25% to 40% more room behind the seats (all v have a spare)

We just packed the V for a 'back to school' trip down I-95 with weight and volume that could only otherwise be handled in a full-sized minivan --- while getting three times the MPG.

My 2014 Dodge Caravan got 28.8 mpg on a family vacation from FL to Maine and back in 2015- my old 2005 model would only do around 21mpg on vacations. Traveling light, I have seen 30mpg many times on a 200 mile trip I make, W/AC on.
