The first of a hundreds of charging stations to make a nationwide network has been opened in the UK.

Our electric highway will kickstart Britain's green car revolution | Dale Vince | Environment | guardian.co.uk

Nothing new there as such but the chargers are being provided free by green electricity supplier Ecotricity [ame="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ecotricity"]Ecotricity - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia[/ame] and are free to use for their customers and use green, renewable electricity. Non customers have free access for 12 months and are then required to pay £10 a year registration, though the electricity for the top up will still be free!

For those who aren't aware Ecotricity is a UK company that specialises in green electricity generated by themselves. The boss, Dale Vince is also a bit of an EV and Electric Motorcycle fan.

I think what they are doing here is fantastic. Where Government and local councils have dragged their feet Ecotricity have jumped in and invested heavily in this new, green technology. Sure they'll make money out of it in the end, but they are certainly helping kick start the take up of EV's by tackling the old 'chicken and egg' conundrum.

But the emphasis on the Ecotricity chargers is that they are green, using homegrown green(er) electricity. They are also free to use after free registration (for Ecotricity customers) and free for 12 months for non customers and then £10 per year (maybe).

Chargemaster on the other hand charge for use if I'm correct. They also use brown electricity. One of the things I like about Ecotricity is the way they pump their profits back into making new green generating capacity. They also opened the UK's first solar park too. They put their money where their mouth is.
